At most universities, including UC Davis, faculty graduation gowns are often different from those worn by students for several key reasons: 1. Academic Rank & Role: Faculty members, especially those with doctoral degrees, are considered to have a higher academic standing and thus wear gowns that symbolize their authority and distinction within the academic community. Faculty gowns often have more elaborate detailing, such as velvet panels and chevrons, to differentiate them from student gowns, which are typically simpler. 2. Tradition and Prestige: Faculty gowns are traditionally more formal in color and design to reflect the status and long academic experience of faculty members. Faculty often wear dark colors, such as black or navy, which are considered more formal and representative of their seniority. Students, on the other hand, typically wear gowns in the color associated with their degree level (bachelor's, master's, etc.), often in muted or bright shades based on the program. 3. Symbolism of the Gown's Design: Faculty gowns are often adorned with velvet panels and more intricate detailing, signifying their academic achievements and the institution's respect for their expertise. These accents help communicate their leadership in the academic community, while students’ gowns are generally simpler to indicate their place in the educational process. Overall, the differences in gown colors and design serve to highlight the academic and professional distinction between faculty and students during commencement ceremonies.
