Crystal 20 Malt - Riverbend

Light Caramel and Toffee • Golden Color Boost • Gentle Sweetness for Pale Styles Crystal 20 is a light caramel malt prized for the soft toffee sweetness and rich golden color it lends to pale ales and golden beers. Like all crystal malts it is stewed during production, converting starches into caramelized sugars that add sweetness, body, and head retention straight to the finished beer. With an extract potential of 35 PPG and a color of 20 °Lovibond, Crystal 20 sits in the sweet spot between near-invisible Crystal 10 and the amber-driving Crystal 40 — pronounced enough to taste, light enough to keep a beer firmly golden. Flavor & Aroma Profile Light, smooth caramel flavor Soft toffee notes Gentle malty sweetness Deep gold to light amber color contribution Fuller body and better foam stability Small additions add quiet caramel roundness to crisp pale beers, while larger shares bring an unmistakable toffee sweetness and push the color toward light amber — a simple lever for dialing in both flavor and appearance. Brewing ApplicationsCrystal 20 is a staple ingredient in many golden and pale beer styles, including: American Pale Ale Golden Ale American IPA Blonde Ale Cream Ale English Summer Ale It is also a versatile blending malt, often combined with darker crystals to build layered caramel complexity. Usage RecommendationsCrystal 20 is typically used at 5–15% of the grain bill. Lower percentages add balance and body to hop-forward beers, while higher percentages create a sweeter, toffee-touched malt profile with a noticeably deeper golden color. In IPAs, keep it toward the low end so the caramel supports rather than fights the hops; in golden and blonde ales it can comfortably take a larger role.
