Black Dragon Cryptomeria

Cryptomeria Black Dragon is a striking, slow-growing evergreen conifer known for its dark green, almost black foliage and dense, upright form. This unique Japanese cedar cultivar is perfect for adding year-round visual interest and texture to gardens of all sizes. With its rich, dark-green needles and compact, conical shape, Cryptomeria Black Dragon is an excellent choice for a focal point in a mixed border, foundation planting, or even as a specimen in a rock garden. Over time, it can grow to 8 to 10 feet, with a width of 6 feet, creating a bold statement in any landscape. Ideal for USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, Cryptomeria Black Dragon thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils. This hardy conifer is relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal pruning due to its naturally tidy and symmetrical shape. The dark, textured foliage contrasts beautifully when paired with lighter-colored plants, flowering perennials, or even conifers, adding depth and drama to your garden design. Its versatility allows it to be used in a variety of landscape settings, whether you’re creating a traditional Japanese garden, an evergreen privacy screen, or simply adding an elegant vertical accent to your space. Cryptomeria Black Dragon is also resistant to deer and most common pests, making it a reliable and resilient addition to your landscape. To help establish this conifer, water regularly during the first growing season and add a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Once mature, Black Dragon is quite drought-tolerant, thriving with minimal watering and care. Its distinctive, dark foliage and compact habit make it an attractive option for both formal and informal gardens, providing year-round beauty and a unique visual impact that continues to improve with age.
