Crow's Gift Earrings

I have wanted to befriend a crow for the longest time. I would gladly leave peanuts daily for a chance at a shiny button, a bit of glass, a pull tab. Ornithologists call it reciprocal gifting — the bird returns an object to someone who has fed it, as though closing a loop of trust. But anyone who has received one of these small, strange offerings knows it feels less like science and more like being chosen. These earrings made me think of my long desire to be a crow's trusted friend. There is an old and cross-cultural fascination with the crow as keeper of hidden knowledge, as collector of what others overlook. In Japanese folklore, crows are divine messengers. In Celtic tradition, they guard the threshold between worlds. And in the everyday — in a backyard in winter, on a fire escape at dawn — they are simply creatures that notice. They remember faces. They bring gifts to the ones who pay attention. The glass in these earrings carries that same quality: something luminous and a little mysterious, offered without explanation, asking only to be appreciated. Jill Makes, a woman-owned studio in Lafayette, Louisiana, works in glass with an intimacy that suits the metaphor. Each earring is a small, self-contained world — light moves through the glass differently depending on the angle, the hour, the color of what you're wearing. The effect is less like jewelry and more like a found object that happened to be beautiful. Strung on gold-filled hoops, the earrings measure 1½ inches in diameter and weigh 6 grams per earring — a gentle, grounding presence on the ear without heaviness. The ear wires are hypoallergenic, so even sensitive skin can wear them from morning into evening without a thought. Handcrafted by Jill Makes.
