Crossandra

Crossandra (Crossandra spp.)Crossandra is a tropical bloomer that keeps color coming when you want a warm, upbeat look without a complicated routine. Also known as firecracker flower, it pairs glossy green foliage with bright, long-lasting blooms that show up strongly in beds, borders, and patio containers. In frost-free climates it can flower for months, and in cooler regions it shines as a summer annual or an indoor flowering houseplant. Give it warmth, steady moisture, and good light, and it rewards you with a consistently polished, lively display. Distinctive FeaturesCrossandra is valued for its rich, tropical flower spikes in shades that commonly include orange, coral, salmon, and yellow, set above textured, dark green leaves. The plant has a naturally shrubby, mounded habit that looks full and intentional without heavy pruning. Bloom is typically strongest from spring through fall outdoors in warm climates, and it can continue indoors with bright light and humidity. Its combination of glossy foliage and steady color makes it an easy way to keep a space looking fresh and finished. Growing Conditions Sun: Part shade outdoors, or bright indirect light indoors; tolerate morning sun with afternoon shade in hotter areas. Soil: Rich, well-drained soil that holds moisture without staying wet, with slightly acidic conditions often preferred. Water: Keep evenly moist, letting the surface dry slightly between waterings, and avoid soggy roots. USDA Zones: 10 to 11 for reliable outdoor perennial performance, and commonly grown as an annual elsewhere. Mature Size: Commonly 1 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, depending on type and growing conditions. Notable Traits: Best flowering comes with warmth, humidity, and consistent light. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use the bright blooms as a focal point in a shaded entry bed or on a patio where the color reads instantly. Containers: Excellent in pots for porches and patios, especially where you want steady bloom and glossy foliage. Foundation Beds: Adds clean, tropical color in protected, part-shade foundation plantings in warm climates. Indoor Color: A strong flowering houseplant choice for bright windows when humidity is adequate. Seasonal Bedding: Works as a summer annual in cooler regions for long-lasting warm-season color. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply when the top inch of soil dries, and reduce watering in cooler, lower-light periods. Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes to keep plants blooming and looking tidy. Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth to support flowering, avoiding heavy fertilization that pushes soft growth. Pruning: Pinch or trim lightly to encourage branching and a fuller shape. Cold Protection: Protect from cold, and bring containers indoors before temperatures drop into the mid 50s F. Why Choose Crossandra? Long Bloom Season: Delivers extended color from spring through fall in warm conditions. Glossy Foliage: Adds a clean, polished green backdrop that looks good even between bloom cycles. Shade-Friendly Color: Provides strong flower impact in part shade where many bloomers fade. Container Ready: Fits patio pots and mixed planters with an easy, full habit. Indoor Versatility: Can be grown as a flowering houseplant with bright light and added humidity. If you want dependable tropical color with a refined, garden-center finish, crossandra is an easy win in the right conditions. Keep it warm, keep it evenly moist, and give it bright light without harsh afternoon sun. Use it near seating areas, entries, and shaded patios where the color can do the most work. With simple deadheading and steady care, it stays attractive and blooming for a long stretch of the season.
