Crested Monkey Tail Cactus – Cleistocactus colademononis ‘Crested’

The Crested Monkey Tail Cactus, known as Cleistocactus colademononis ‘Crested’, is a fascinating and unique variety of the Monkey Tail Cactus. It is prized for its unusual, crested growth, which results in fan-like or twisted formations, giving it an extraordinary appearance. Native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia and Argentina, this cactus has grown in popularity among collectors and succulent enthusiasts due to its distinct look and relatively easy care.  In its crested form, the Cleistocactus colademononis crested does not grow as long as the standard Monkey Tail Cactus, but it can still grow up to 18 inches tall. Its compact growth makes it suitable for small spaces while still providing a dramatic presence.  One of the most striking features of this cactus is its crested growth. Instead of the usual long, tail-like stems, the crested form develops a fan-shaped or convoluted growth pattern, giving it a sculptural, almost artistic appearance. The stems are covered in soft, white hair-like spines that add to the plant’s visual appeal and softness. Over time, it can form an intricate and dense network of stems, making it an excellent focal point in a collection. One of the most striking features of this cactus is its crested growth. These tubular blooms typically appear during the growing season, which is in late spring and summer. Although less frequent than the standard form, the flowers can add a splash of color to the already eye-catching plant. The blooms are known to attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees, thanks to their bright color and nectar-rich nature.  When it comes to care, this cactus thrives in bright, indirect light, or full sunlight. It prefers at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily, particularly in the morning or late afternoon. Use well-draining  specialized  cactus soil to prevent root rot. Drainage can be improved by adding perlite or sand to the mixture. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, as over-watering can cause root rot, so be cautious.  When grown indoors, it prefers a temperature range of 65-75°F with protection from drafts and cold weather. For outdoor cultivation, it is suitable for USDA zones 9-11, where it can tolerate mild frost, though prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures should be avoided. Feed the cactus with a diluted NPK fertilizer during the growing season which is typically in the spring. Fertilizing once a year is usually sufficient to promote healthy growth.  The Crested Monkey Tail Cactus is considered non-toxic to humans and pets, making it a safe option for homes with animals or children. However, its spines, while soft, can still cause irritation if handled improperly, so it's best to avoid direct contact.  Overall, the Crested Monkey Tail Cactus (Cleistocactus colademononis ‘Crested’) is a rare and visually striking plant that offers a unique twist on the traditional Monkey Tail Cactus. It’s unusual, crested form, soft spines, and bright flowers make it a stunning addition to any cactus collection. With its relatively low-maintenance care requirements, this cactus is well-suited for both indoor and outdoor environments, offering both aesthetic appeal and practicality. Whether you're a seasoned collector or a beginner, this cactus is sure to captivate attention and enhance your plant collection.
