Crassula 'Dorothy'

Description Crassula 'Dorothy' Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues   Crassula 'Dorothy' is a compact succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky, arid regions of South Africa. It has an upright rosette form that adapts well to container growing and bright indoor spaces.   It produces neatly stacked, fleshy leaves that grow in a tight upright habit, forming a structured silhouette with layered texture. The leaves carry the signature Crassula thickness and smooth surface characteristic of the genus, and as it matures, the stacked form becomes increasingly eye-catching on a windowsill or shelf. Its compact size keeps the plant tidy without requiring frequent pruning or repotting.   Crassula 'Dorothy' produces small, star-shaped flowers typical of the Crassula genus, and cooler autumn temperatures often encourage blooming. A drop in nighttime temps can trigger a floral display, so moving it to a cooler location in fall may initiate flowering.   Move it outside in summer in a warm, sheltered spot with bright indirect light, providing cover from rain to prevent waterlogging and root issues. It tolerates dry heated indoor air well. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Keep it on a high shelf away from cats and dogs, as the sap may cause irritation on contact with skin or paws.   Crassula 'Dorothy' grows well in bright indirect light and scorches easily in direct south-facing sun.   Water it every 10-14 days in summer and reduce to once a month in winter, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.   Crassula 'Dorothy' does best in gritty, well-draining soil mixed with perlite or coarse sand.   It prefers warm temperatures between 60–80°F and should never be exposed to frost or freezing conditions.   Crassula 'Dorothy' is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a light, balanced feed once in spring.   It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, where frost rarely drops below 20-25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Along milder coastal stretches of Oregon and in parts of New Mexico and Arkansas within zone 7-8 microclimates, it grows as a container plant moved indoors before cold snaps. Across the rest of the United States, including New York, Illinois, Colorado, Washington, and beyond, it flourishes as an indoor plant kept in a bright, warm spot throughout the year. Q: How often should I water Crassula 'Dorothy'? A: During the growing season, allow the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot. In winter, reduce to once monthly. Q: What window placement works best indoors? A: Crassula 'Dorothy' grows well in bright indirect light, away from harsh direct rays. North or east-facing windows prevent leaf scorch; south-facing windows receive too much direct sun. Q: Is Crassula 'Dorothy' safe around pets? A: Cats and dogs shouldn't nibble or eat it, as the sap may cause skin or paw irritation. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach. Q: Can it survive while I'm on holiday? A: Crassula 'Dorothy' tolerates up to ten days without water as long as soil is moist and it sits in a bright spot before departure. Q: How fast does Crassula 'Dorothy' grow? A: It stays compact and tidy without needing frequent pruning or repotting. Q: Can it thrive outdoors in summer? A: Crassula 'Dorothy' does well outside in a warm, sheltered spot with bright indirect light; provide rain cover to prevent waterlogging and move indoors before temperatures drop in autumn.
