This original atlas plate from Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas presents the Dominion of Canada during a formative chapter in North American history. Published in the late 1880s, the map captures the vast nation just two decades after Confederation, when the Northwest Territories remained an enormous undivided expanse stretching from Hudson Bay to the Arctic. The chromolithograph coloring employs the soft pastel palette characteristic of Victorian cartography, with delicate yellows, pinks, and greens distinguishing the various territories and provinces. Notable is the detailed rendering of Hudson Bay and its surrounding districts, the early organization of what would become the Prairie provinces, and the extensive labeling of forts, lakes, and settlements that marked the frontier of European expansion. A compelling document of Canadian nation-building, this map offers both historical insight and decorative appeal. The George F. Cram Company of Chicago produced some of the most accessible and widely distributed atlases of the Gilded Age, making geographic knowledge available to American households eager to understand their northern neighbor. Size: 10.5" x 13.25" Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear. Paper toning in accordance with the print's age. Marks/stains as per photo.
