Whisky vs. Whiskey: What’s the Difference? The difference between whisky and whiskey primarily comes down to geography and tradition: Whisky (no "e") – Used in Scotland, Canada, and Japan. Whiskey (with "e") – Used in Ireland and the United States. Why the Difference? The spelling variation dates back to the 19th century, when Irish distillers added an "e" to distinguish their whiskey from Scottish whisky. This convention was later adopted by American distillers.
