Courriere XO 750ML

Courriere XO 750ML is a French brandy aged in ex-sherry oak casks, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750ml format. Produced by Distilleries de Matha in the heart of France's Cognac region, this XO-designated expression draws its character from extended sherry-cask maturation, delivering dried fruit and caramel richness uncommon at its price tier. Quick Facts: ABV: 40% (80 proof)  |  Origin: Cognac Region, France  |  XO Designation  |  Distillery: Distilleries de Matha Production & Heritage Distilleries de Matha operates in the geographic heartland of French brandy production. Courriere XO is distilled from wine distillate and then matured in ex-sherry oak casks — a step that distinguishes it from most brandies in its category, which typically rely solely on new or neutral French oak. The sherry cask influence imparts additional layers of dried fruit sweetness and nuttiness that shape the final spirit. While the XO designation signals extended aging, this bottling positions itself as an accessible French brandy rather than a classified Cognac AOC product. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with inviting dried fruit and vanilla before giving way to a gentle oak undertone. There is a warm, honeyed quality that sets the stage for the palate. Taste: The entry is soft and fruit-forward, with apricot and caramel arriving early on the mid-palate. As it develops, sherry-influenced sweetness emerges alongside toasted oak, creating a smooth, well-balanced profile that feels richer than the price point suggests. Finish: The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of caramel, dried stone fruit, and a faint spice from the oak. A subtle warmth carries through without any harsh bite. How to Drink Courriere XO At 40% ABV, Courriere XO drinks comfortably neat at room temperature, where the sherry cask influence is most apparent. A single large ice cube opens up the fruit notes without diluting the body too quickly. It also performs well in classic brandy cocktails: Sidecar — The apricot and caramel notes pair naturally with Cointreau and fresh lemon, adding depth without overwhelming the citrus. Brandy Old Fashioned — The inherent sweetness from sherry cask aging means less added sugar is needed, letting the oak and dried fruit take center stage. French Connection — Mixed with amaretto, the nutty sherry undertones in Courriere XO amplify the almond character for a seamless two-ingredient drink. For drinkers seeking an everyday brandy that works neat and in cocktails, it represents solid quality for the money. Why Courriere XO? The defining feature of Courriere XO is its maturation in ex-sherry oak casks — a production choice rarely seen at this price level in the French brandy category. That single decision gives the spirit a dried fruit richness and caramel depth that most comparably priced brandies, typically aged in standard oak, simply cannot match. Produced by Distilleries de Matha in France's renowned Cognac region, the brandy benefits from generations of regional distilling expertise even outside the strict Cognac appellation. For anyone seeking a versatile, full-flavored French brandy that punches above its weight class, Courriere XO makes a compelling case.
