Coping Statements for Depression

Coping statements for depression are phrases that turn negative thoughts into positive, more realistic ones. These are reassuring words that provide clients with encouragement during tough times. Research shows that shifting one’s attention to positive aspects is an adaptive strategy that can improve a client’s outcomes. The Coping Statements for Depression worksheet is a go-to resource for clients managing emotions during depressive episodes or overwhelming negative thoughts. It provides ready-to-use statements, such as “I am in charge of how I feel” and “I have the power to create change in my life.” There are also empty thought bubbles where clients can add more personalized coping statements. Having this handout accessible can help kids and teens feel safer and calmer when they experience strong emotions. They can cut out and place the coping statements on their notebooks, study boards, or bedroom walls for easy reference. Parents and teachers may provide additional support by discussing each coping statement. It would be helpful to start the discussion by explaining why positive self-talk matters.
