Controlled Remote Viewing: Useful Tips and Tricks By John P. Stahler | Contributor: Paul H. Smith, PhD Drawing on decades of military and civilian research, declassified program documents, and the original Swann–Puthoff methodology, Controlled Remote Viewing: Useful Tips and Tricks is an authoritative and practical guide to one of the most rigorously tested disciplines in the study of human consciousness. Whether you are new to remote viewing or a seasoned practitioner, this book distills the hard-won lessons of the U.S. government's Star Gate program into actionable techniques that sharpen perception, improve session accuracy, and deepen your understanding of non-local awareness. Grounded in science and refined through thousands of operational sessions, this is an essential addition to any serious remote viewer's library. About the Author John P. Stahler is a former president of the International Remote Viewing Association (IRVA) and vice president of the Center Lane Project, a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of the original CRV methodology as developed by Ingo Swann and Hal Puthoff. He has studied under some of the field's most distinguished teachers, including Paul H. Smith, Lyn Buchanan, and David Morehouse, and has logged over two decades of experience as a practitioner, project manager, and researcher. A holder of multiple patents with designs flown on NASA's Space Shuttle Program, Stahler brings the precision of an engineer and the depth of a lifelong student of consciousness to his work in remote viewing. About the Contributors Ingo Swann (1933–2013) was the co-creator of Controlled Remote Viewing alongside physicist Harold Puthoff, and is universally recognized as the father of modern remote viewing. Beginning with landmark experiments at Stanford Research Institute in 1972 that captured the attention of the CIA, Swann developed the structured CRV protocol that became the foundation of all remote viewing methodology used today. An internationally acclaimed artist, author, and pioneering parapsychology researcher, Swann trained the original military viewers at Fort Meade and remained the spiritual and intellectual cornerstone of the field until his passing — his insights and contributions woven throughout every page of this book. Paul H. Smith, PhD is a retired U.S. Army Major and one of the longest-serving members of the military's classified remote viewing program at Fort Meade, where he was personally trained in Controlled Remote Viewing by Ingo Swann in 1984. He served as the primary author of the program's official CRV training manual and as theory instructor for new trainees, logging over a thousand operational and training sessions during his tenure. After retiring from the Army, he founded Remote Viewing Instructional Services, Inc. and co-founded the International Remote Viewing Association, and holds a PhD in philosophy of mind and consciousness from the University of Texas at Austin. His book Reading the Enemy's Mind was an Editors' Choice selection for Reader's Digest. Tom McNear is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and the first military viewer personally trained in Controlled Remote Viewing by Ingo Swann — and the only student Swann trained all the way through Stage VII, earning Swann's designation as his true protégé and "the formal prototype for the CRV-trained military remote viewer." A member of the STAR GATE program from 1981 to 1985, he wrote the first CRV manual, Coordinate Remote Viewing Stages I–VI and Beyond, which became the basis for the Defense Intelligence Agency's own published manual a year later. After a 45-year career spanning uniformed service, counterintelligence, and civilian intelligence work, McNear remains one of the most historically significant figures in the entire history of the remote viewing program. Bill Ray is a retired U.S. Army Major and DoD civilian with more than 50 years of service as an intelligence and counterintelligence officer, and one of only five military viewers personally trained in Controlled Remote Viewing by Ingo Swann and Hal Puthoff at the inception of the Star Gate program. He served as a remote viewer at the Fort Meade unit for over three and a half years, including eighteen months as the unit's commander, and from 1985 to 1986 oversaw the complex transfer of the Star Gate program from Army Intelligence (INSCOM) to the Defense Intelligence Agency. He holds a bachelor's degree in history from the State University of New York and a master's degree in international relations from the University of Southern California. Sandy Ray is an accomplished remote viewer with decades of experience whose journey into consciousness began with a near-death experience in 1970 and deepened through years of exploration in Native American spirituality, the Charismatic movement, and spontaneous automatic writing. In the 1980s, while her husband Bill was undergoing CRV training at Fort Meade, she developed a personal correspondence with Ingo Swann himself — sharing her automatic writings with him by letter and phone — and later assisted Bill in training international students in remote viewing while stationed in the Netherlands. She served as the first Treasurer of the International Remote Viewing Association from 2001 to approximately 2012, and is credited with a significant discovery in the field: the identification of Stage 4.5 in the CRV protocol. Today she practices a unique blend of CRV and Extended Remote Viewing, preferring to work in ERV, and remains one of the quiet but deeply influential figures in the history of the method. Tom Bergen was a close personal friend and webmaster of Ingo Swann, and one of a very small number of civilians to receive direct, individual CRV training from Swann himself outside the military program. His unique training relationship with the creator of remote viewing gave him a rare firsthand perspective on the evolution of the CRV protocol and the philosophy behind it. His insights and review of this book reflect decades of personal connection to both the man and the method at the heart of Controlled Remote Viewing. Jana Rogge is a German researcher, author, and operational remote viewer who serves as President of the Center Lane Project and Senior Advisor to MK Advisors, where she leads R&D on remote viewing and ESP applications with global defense and intelligence affiliations. Trained in CRV, ERV, and TRV under an elite roster of teachers — including Paul H. Smith, Bill Ray, Pam Coronado, and Angela Thompson Smith — she won the IRVA/iRiS research award in 2022 for her research on data correctness in CRV sessions. She is a licensed CRV instructor, Editor-in-Chief of Gestalt magazine, and a member of the International Remote Viewing Association, the Parapsychological Association, and the Society of Scientific Exploration. Shiva Amini is an operational remote viewer and Integrative Consciousness Specialist trained by some of the most accomplished experts in the field, including Paul H. Smith (CRV), Pam Coronado (ERV), Skip Atwater of the Monroe Institute, Bill Ray — one of the five original Star Gate program viewers — and Jana Rogge, senior advisor to MK Advisors with global defense and intelligence affiliations. She applies intelligence-grade techniques in Controlled, Extended, and Tactical Remote Viewing to forensic investigations, archaeological research, and future-concept exploration. Currently contributing her operational expertise to organizations including Psi Unit, Shiva represents a new generation of highly trained civilian remote viewers carrying forward the legacy of the Star Gate program.
