Common Boxwood

Common Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens)Common Boxwood is a classic evergreen shrub valued for its year-round structure, dense foliage, and strong ability to bring order to the landscape. Its rich green leaves and naturally rounded habit make it especially useful in foundation beds, hedges, formal borders, and traditional garden designs where a clean, finished look matters. Because it can be shaped, clipped, or left more natural, it works well in both highly structured layouts and softer mixed plantings. This is a strong choice for gardeners who want a long-lived evergreen that provides dependable form, steady color, and a reliable focal point in every season. Distinctive FeaturesThis broadleaf evergreen shrub forms a dense, rounded to broad-rounded habit with small, glossy dark green leaves that remain attractive through the year. Over time, it can become much larger than many compact modern boxwood cultivars, which gives it added value where a fuller evergreen presence is needed. Its dense branching and fine texture make it especially effective for clipping into hedges, screens, and formal shapes. The year-round foliage gives it lasting landscape value, helping tie together plantings in both traditional and contemporary garden settings. Growing Conditions Sun: Plant in full sun to part shade, with some protection from harsh afternoon sun and winter wind in more exposed sites. Soil: Provide moist, well-drained soil and avoid constantly wet or poorly drained conditions. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then maintain moderate supplemental watering during dry periods. Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8. Mature Size: Commonly reaches about 5 to 15 feet tall and wide in shrub form, with older specimens potentially becoming larger. Habit: Grows in a dense, rounded to broad-rounded form and can develop into a large shrub or small tree over time. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use it as a focal point in foundation beds or formal garden layouts where its dense evergreen mass can anchor the planting year-round. Hedges: Plant it in rows to create classic evergreen hedges with a clean, structured appearance. Foundation Plantings: Use it around entryways, porches, and front beds where evergreen structure is needed in every season. Formal Gardens: Add it to symmetrical or clipped garden designs where boxwood helps reinforce order and permanence. Screening: Let it grow larger where a broad evergreen screen or visual divider is needed. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during establishment, then water during prolonged dry periods if needed. Pruning: Prune lightly after the last spring frost if shaping is needed, since tender new growth can be damaged by late cold. Mulching: Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and protect the shallow roots from heat and drying. Placement: Shelter from strong winter wind and intense reflected heat to help reduce bronzing and foliage stress. Air Circulation: Maintain good airflow and thin interior growth occasionally if needed to support long-term plant health. Why Choose Common Boxwood? Evergreen Structure: Dense green foliage gives the landscape year-round form and visual continuity. Classic Style: It is one of the defining shrubs for formal, traditional, and high-structure garden designs.
