Fastigiata Eastern White Pine

Fastigiata Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus 'Fastigiata') Fastigiata Eastern White Pine is a narrow, upright evergreen that brings tall screening and soft texture to spaces where wider evergreens will not fit. Its columnar shape makes it a practical choice for adding privacy, defining property lines, or creating vertical structure near patios and entries. The long, soft needles keep the look light and inviting, even as the plant adds real year-round presence. If you want a slender conifer that delivers height without taking over the bed, Fastigiata is a strong option. Distinctive Features This eastern white pine cultivar forms a tall, columnar silhouette with dense, upward branching that stays tighter than the species. The needles are long and soft, typically blue-green, creating a gentle texture that contrasts well with broadleaf evergreens and flowering shrubs. Its narrow footprint makes it especially useful for modern landscapes, tight foundation lines, and layered screening plantings. As an evergreen, it provides consistent color and structure through winter, when vertical form becomes even more valuable. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with best density and form in full sun. Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and it adapts to a range of soils when drainage is good. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide deep watering during extended dry periods. USDA Zones: Zones 3 to 7. Mature Size: Typically grows about 30 to 50 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point to add strong vertical structure in a bed where a narrow evergreen is needed year-round. Screening: Plant in rows to create privacy screens in tighter spaces where broad evergreens will not work. Property Line Definition: Use to define edges and create a tall evergreen wall without a wide footprint. Foundation Accents: Place near corners or along taller walls to add height and soften architecture. Wind Buffering: Use as part of a mixed windbreak where vertical evergreen structure is needed. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep evenly moist the first year, then water during drought to maintain vigor. Mulching: Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and protect roots, keeping mulch off the trunk. Pruning: Prune minimally, removing only dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring. Spacing: Provide room for airflow and allow adequate spacing when planting as a screen. Site Selection: Choose a site with good drainage and some protection from harsh, drying winter winds if possible. Why Choose Fastigiata Eastern White Pine? Narrow Form: Adds height and screening in spaces where wider evergreens do not fit. Soft Needle Texture: Long, flexible needles create a lighter, more inviting evergreen look. Four-Season Structure: Tall evergreen form keeps landscapes defined through winter. Versatile Screening: Works for privacy, property line definition, and vertical accents. Classic White Pine Character: Delivers the familiar look of eastern white pine in a more space-efficient shape. If you want a tall evergreen that stays narrow and adds soft texture year-round, Fastigiata Eastern White Pine is an excellent choice. Give it sun, well-drained soil, and consistent moisture while it establishes, then let its columnar form provide long-term privacy and structure. It is a practical way to add vertical evergreen presence without sacrificing valuable bed space.
