Columnar Tulip Tree

The Columnar Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera 'Fastigiatum') gives you everything people love about the native tulip tree in a dramatically narrow silhouette. Where the species can spread 30 feet or more, this cultivar stays just 10 to 15 feet wide, making it one of the best large trees for tight spaces, side yards, and urban lots. You still get the beautiful tulip-shaped blooms and butter-yellow fall color, just in a fraction of the footprint. Why You'll Love the Columnar Tulip Tree Narrow columnar form (only 10 to 15 feet wide) fits where standard shade trees can't Fast growing at two or more feet per year, so you get shade quickly Tulip-shaped yellow-green and orange flowers bloom in May through June Butter-yellow fall foliage brings seasonal color without the wide canopy Native species that supports local pollinators and wildlife Moderately deer resistant for peace of mind Growing Conditions Hardy in zones 4 through 9, the Columnar Tulip Tree does best in full sun but tolerates part shade. Give it moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil for optimal growth. It handles a range of conditions once established, though consistent watering during its first two growing seasons will set it up for long-term success. Size and Growth Habit This cultivar reaches 40 to 50 feet tall but stays remarkably contained at just 10 to 15 feet wide. The upright, fastigiate branching habit keeps everything tight to the central leader. Growth rate is fast (two or more feet per year), which means you'll see real progress every season. The narrow profile holds its shape with minimal pruning. Landscape Uses and Design Ideas The Columnar Tulip Tree excels in spots where you need height without width. Line your driveway with them for a formal allee, plant a row along a property line for a tall living screen, or tuck one into a narrow side yard where a standard shade tree would overwhelm the space. It works well in pairs flanking an entryway or garden gate. Combine it with lower native plants for a layered, naturalistic look that supports local ecosystems. Planting and Care Tips Space Columnar Tulip Trees 10 to 12 feet apart for a continuous screen, or plant a single specimen where vertical impact matters most. Water deeply and regularly through the first two seasons. A three-inch layer of organic mulch around the base will help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
