Taylor Cured Oak is a monumental event in the whiskey world. Originally released as a legendary one-off expression in 2015, Buffalo Trace Distillery has officially brought back this incredibly rare bourbon as a highly limited offering for May 2026. Honoring the innovative legacy of Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr.—the "Father of the Modern Bourbon Industry" who helped pass the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897—this release is an absolute must-have centerpiece for any premium collection. The 13-Month Curing Process What sets the Cured Oak expression apart is the extreme dedication to barrel craftsmanship. Most white oak barrel staves used by Buffalo Trace are air-dried for six months. However, the staves used for this specific 2026 release were air-dried outside for a full 13 months before being coopered into barrels. This extended, more-than-doubled curing time pulls more tannin and terpene development out of the wood, allowing the whiskey to extract deeper, richer, and more complex characters from the oak during maturation. Aged for exactly 10 years and presented as a 100-proof (50% ABV) Bottled-in-Bond bourbon, Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley selected this specific age to ensure an exceptional balance between the profound influence of the extra-seasoned barrels and the natural sweetness of the bourbon. Tasting Notes Nose: An inviting and deeply layered aroma of dried fruit, sweet vanilla, and rich toffee. Palate: Rich, complex, and deeply inviting. The palate delivers profound notes of robust tobacco, dark dried fruits, and sweet vanilla, beautifully complemented by undertones of heavily seasoned oak. Finish: Exceptionally long, dry, and layered, showcasing the added depth and complexity derived from the 13-month cured barrel staves. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) What is the difference between the 2015 and 2026 Cured Oak releases? The original 2015 Cured Oak release carried a 17-year age statement, whereas the new 2026 release is aged for 10 years. According to Buffalo Trace, the 10-year mark for this release achieved the perfect, exceptional balance of flavor without the oak overpowering the bourbon. What does "Cured Oak" mean? "Curing" refers to the process of air-drying the oak staves outdoors before they are assembled into barrels. For this release, the staves were cured for 13 months—more than twice the standard six-month period. This allows the whiskey to extract deeper, richer flavors from the wood. Is this a Bottled-in-Bond bourbon? Yes. In honor of Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr.'s pivotal role in the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, this release adheres to strict guidelines and is bottled at exactly 100 proof.
