My Showgirls, Collier's Weekly

This delightful Collier's cover from October 1937 showcases Eric Godal's characteristic wit and charm. The Austrian-American illustrator delivers a perfectly composed comedic scene: two men in theater seats, backs to the viewer, peer through binoculars at a pair of showgirls performing in what appears to be a burlesque or revue setting. The soft pink and cream palette, punctuated by touches of powder blue, creates an atmosphere of theatrical fantasy. Godal's genius lies in the composition. By placing us behind the audience members, we become complicit in their ogling, drawn into the humor rather than standing outside it. The performers themselves are rendered with Art Deco elegance: a blonde lounging in an oversized champagne coupe, a brunette usherette frozen mid-stride. The scene captures the playful sensibility of late 1930s American entertainment perfectly. Collier's was among America's most influential weeklies during this era, and covers like this one demonstrate why the magazine commanded such attention at the newsstand. A standout piece for collectors of American illustration, golden age magazine art, or Depression-era popular culture.
