This tree, located in a California State Park, towers nearly 400 feet into the sky, and is approaching 2,000 years of age. Commonly reaching breathtaking heights, the magnificent, column-like Coast Redwood is not only the world’s tallest tree, but also one of the world’s most long-lived, with life-spans of more than 2,000 years. Fossil records also indicate that the species is among the most ancient of trees — its lineage dating back 160 million years. At maturity, typical Coast Redwoods tower 175 to 300 feet, and have massive trunks (8 feet to an astounding 20 feet in diameter!) with deeply furrowed, reddish-brown bark. Today, only about 5% of America’s primeval Coast Redwoods remain, most under state and federal protection. This species is truly one of the natural wonders of Planet Earth. About Jonsteen's Seedlings All of our trees are seed-grown at our nursery on California's Redwood Coast, which is inspected monthly and licensed by the California Department of Agriculture. Trees can provide a natural barrier against high winds, temperatures, noise pollution and soil erosion, all while benefiting local air quality, wildlife and property values — a Jonsteen seedling will only grow in value and beauty! About Jonsteen's 100% Guarantee All of our trees are guaranteed to arrive healthy and in good condition. If your tree perishes despite your honest efforts, we will be happy to replace it with a small-sized seedling for just the cost of shipping/handling. You can learn more about our guarantee and tree replacement policy here. Size Seedling Size Chart: Medium Due to the dynamic nature of actively growing trees, as well as the tremendous variation between species’ growth rates, we rely on the cubic volume of a seedling’s root mass to determine its “size” (Small / Medium / Large / XL). Within each size there is minor variance — the dimensions provided here represent the category minimum. If exact measurements are essential, please contact us about current stock. Care Caring for Redwoods As its name implies, the Coast Redwood is a coastal species, native to the foggy, temperate regions of the far northern California coastline. This tree should be grown in areas where winter temperatures only occasionally drop below freezing. It loves misting, and thrives where it can receive a generous supply of water (although, like most plants, it cannot tolerate constantly water-logged soils and definitely enjoys the opportunity to dry out somewhat in-between waterings). The Coast Redwood can withstand some cold temperatures, but will not tolerate prolonged periods of sub-freezing weather. In terms of heat, the Coast Redwood can withstand significant periods of hot weather provided enough water is available. In hot climates, partial shading and occasional misting is advised for the Coast Redwood. In regions with colder climates, the Coast Redwood may be successfully housed indoors temporarily for the cold season, or protected in the landscape through heavy mulching. Printable PDF
