Quick Facts: ABV: ~13.5%  |  Origin: Marlborough, New Zealand  |  Varietal: 100% Sauvignon Blanc  |  Producer: Cloudy Bay Vineyards Production & Heritage Cloudy Bay Vineyards was founded in 1985 in Marlborough's Wairau Valley and is now part of the LVMH luxury group. Fruit is sourced from vineyards across several sub-regions — Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick, and Brancott — with each site fermented separately in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Approximately 3% of the blend sees fermentation in old French oak barrels, adding subtle textural complexity. The winemaking team selects from over 90 individual batches each vintage, prioritizing quality over volume — meaning production levels may shift year to year, but the wine's signature character remains intact. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with vibrant citrus — makrut lime, Meyer lemon, and grapefruit — followed by ripe passionfruit and white nectarine. Subtle notes of elderflower and freshly cut blackcurrant leaf add an herbal, aromatic lift. Taste: The entry is bright and zesty, with juicy passionfruit and citrus at the forefront. The mid-palate builds concentration, revealing layers of honeydew melon, kiwi, and nectarine alongside hints of lemongrass and white pepper. A saline, stony minerality anchors the fruit and keeps the wine taut and focused. Finish: Medium in length with a crisp, mouthwatering quality that lingers on grapefruit pith and mineral notes. Clean and refreshing, it leaves a lasting impression of sea air and fresh herbs. How to Drink Cloudy Bay Pour well chilled, around 8–10°C (46–50°F), in a standard white wine glass to let the aromatics develop. This wine drinks beautifully on its own but also performs in several classic serves. A Sauvignon Blanc Spritz — topped with soda and a twist of lime — makes a lively warm-weather aperitif. The wine's citrus-herbal character slots naturally into a Hugo Spritz, where it echoes the elderflower component. It also works as the base for a White Wine Sangria with stone fruit and fresh mint, where its tropical notes amplify the fruit without losing structure. Best For Hosting a summer seafood dinner with friends Gifting a reliable, internationally recognized bottle to a wine lover Introducing someone to premium New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Pairing with a Thai or Vietnamese takeaway at home Frequently Asked Questions What does Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc taste like? Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc delivers vibrant citrus (lime, grapefruit) and tropical passionfruit flavors balanced by a crisp, stony minerality. It finishes clean and refreshing with lingering herbal and mineral notes. How does Cloudy Bay compare to Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc? Both are fruit-driven Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs, but Cloudy Bay tends toward greater complexity and textural depth, partly due to its multi-sub-region blending across 90+ batches and partial oak fermentation. Oyster Bay is generally positioned at a lower price point and leans into straightforward tropical and citrus fruit character. Is Cloudy Bay good for sipping on its own? Yes — served well chilled, it is an immediately appealing and aromatic white wine with enough concentration and mineral backbone to hold attention without food. Where is Cloudy Bay made? Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is produced by Cloudy Bay Vineyards in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island, drawing fruit from the Wairau Valley sub-regions of Rapaura, Fairhall, Renwick, and Brancott. What foods pair well with Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc? Fresh oysters and shellfish highlight its saline minerality. Seared scallops with a citrus beurre blanc mirror its lime and nectarine notes. Green Thai curry works well, as the wine's acidity cuts through coconut richness. Goat cheese salads complement its herbaceous edge. Ceviche or poké bowls align naturally with its bright, tropical profile. What sizes does Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle, though 375ml half-bottles and 1.5L magnums are also produced for select markets and vintages. Is Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc worth the price? Cloudy Bay positions as a premium Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, sitting above everyday options like Oyster Bay or Kim Crawford, and the multi-batch blending process and consistent critical scores — including 93 points from Vinous — support its place in that tier. Why Cloudy Bay? Since its debut vintage in 1985, Cloudy Bay has functioned as a benchmark for the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc category, helping define the very style other producers now follow. The meticulous selection from over 90 individual fermentation batches — drawn from distinct sub-regions with different soil types and microclimates — gives this wine a layered complexity that single-vineyard or single-batch competitors often lack. Its track record of critical recognition remains strong, with recent vintages earning 93 points from both Vinous and Wineanorak. For drinkers looking for a Sauvignon Blanc that balances immediate drinkability with genuine depth and a proven pedigree, few bottles carry the same weight of reputation backed by consistent quality.
