Cleistocactus straussii - Silver Torch Cactus

Description Cleistocactus straussii - Silver Torch Cactus Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues   Cleistocactus straussii, also called Silver Torch Cactus, is a columnar cactus native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia and Argentina. It adapted to grow on rocky, well-draining mountain slopes where it developed its characteristic woolly appearance as protection against harsh alpine conditions.   Silver-white woolly spines completely cover the tall, slender stems, creating an almost furry texture. Mature plants reach 8-10 feet tall while staying just 3-4 inches in diameter, forming a narrow column. The dense white areoles and long silky spines give the plant its silvery appearance that grows more pronounced as it ages.   Burgundy-red tubular flowers emerge through the white woolly spines during late spring and summer on plants that are at least 3-4 feet tall. These blooms create a bold contrast against the silver-white exterior and attract hummingbirds to the garden.   Cleistocactus straussii is a slow-growing cactus, typically adding 2-4 inches of height per year. The plant's drought-tolerant nature and frost-hardy characteristics make it suitable for long-term container growing or permanent landscape installations in the right climate. Propagation occurs through seeds, as this columnar species rarely produces offsets.   Cleistocactus straussii - Silver Torch Cactus grows well in full sun exposure for optimal growth and spine development.   Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings every 2-3 weeks.   Cleistocactus straussii requires well-draining cactus soil mix with added perlite or pumice for drainage.   It tolerates temperatures from 20°F to 100°F with brief frost tolerance in winter dormancy.   Cleistocactus straussii is a slow-growing cactus requiring minimal fertilizer only during the active growing season in spring.   It is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 9-11, tolerating brief frosts down to 20°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, southern Nevada, and coastal Oregon. Indoor cultivation allows gardeners in colder zones throughout the United States to enjoy this drought-tolerant cactus as a houseplant.
