Clans and Tartans of Scotland

This little book is packed with loads of information. Learn about Scottish Clans, with information on their lines of descent, associations with famous battles, affiliations with kings, earls, castles, and other notable names. There's a lot about William the Conqueror, Viking antecedents, displaced nobility, bloody confrontations, Jacobite allegiances, and many more fine-grain details of Scottish history. Each clan's tartan is featured in full color. Specific clan mottos, crests, plant badges and links to contemporary clan associations are included as well. Also of note to genealogy buffs will be the details about clan emigration to different regions around the world. It's true that this book will be most interesting to those who want to learn more about Scottish Clan history and affiliations, since the story of Scottish Tartans is interwoven with the connections that the people of Scotland have to the land. But the detailed color photos of the more than 100 tartan patterns featured in this book have an appeal that can be almost purely artistic, with their distinctive colored bands, lattices, grids, and bold patterns evoking connections to the art of 20th century masters like Josef Albers, Agnes Martin, and Piet Mondrian. Students of the history of textiles, design and fabric will find plenty to hold their attention as well.
