Odin’s Citronella Mosquito & Insect Repellent – keeps biting insects away so you can focus on the hunt. Formulated with citronella and a proprietary blend of essential oils, this synthetic, oil-based liquid creates a protective barrier that lasts up to 720 hours. Rainproof, easy to apply, and field-ready—it’s the perfect complement to your scent strategy.   Citronella Bug Repellent for Hunters: DEET-Free and Scent-Smart Mosquitoes and biting insects are more than an annoyance in the field — they can ruin a turkey hunt, cut short an early-season scouting trip, or make a camping setup miserable. But many commercial bug repellents are made using DEET and synthetic chemicals that produce a strong odor detectable by game animals at significant distances. For hunters, the standard insect repellent is a bad trade: you solve the bug problem and create a scent problem. Our “Citronella” scent is actually a proprietary blend of plant-derived compounds proven effective against mosquitoes, including citronellal, geraniol (an EPA-registered biopesticide found in citronella grass and rose oil), and other naturally derived active ingredients. These compounds work together to mask the chemical cues — CO₂, lactic acid, and octenol — that mosquitoes use to find you. Why Citronella Works Better Than DEET for Hunters DEET works. Nobody disputes that. But DEET was designed for soldiers and hikers, not hunters. The problem for hunters is simple: DEET-based repellents produce a strong chemical odor that deer and other game animals can detect at significant distances. You solve the mosquito problem and create a scent problem. That’s a bad trade when you’ve spent two hours getting to your stand undetected. Citronella is a naturally derived repellent that does not produce the harsh chemical signature of DEET. Deer are not alarmed by citronella the way they are by chemical repellents. For turkey hunters, the scent question is less of a concern — turkeys rely primarily on sight and hearing, not smell — but the benefit of avoiding chemical residue on your skin and clothing is still real. Nobody wants to marinate in DEET for six hours in a ground blind. Odin’s citronella beads take this a step further. Instead of applying a chemical to your skin or clothing, you deploy the beads around your position. They create a repellent zone without direct body contact — no residue on your camo, no chemical smell on your hands when you’re handling calls or drawing your bow. And because the beads are synthetic, chemical-free, and biodegradable, you’re leaving nothing behind in the field. Hunt clean, leave clean. How Mosquitoes Find You — And How Citronella Stops Them Mosquitoes don’t find you by accident. They use a three-stage targeting system that’s remarkably sophisticated for something you can kill with a slap. Stage 1 — CO₂ Detection (Long Range). From as far as 150 feet away, mosquitoes detect the carbon dioxide plume from your breathing. Every exhale sends a signal. CO₂ is the primary long-range attractant — it tells the mosquito that a warm-blooded host is in the area. This is why you can be sitting perfectly still in a Treestand and they still find you. You’re breathing. That’s enough. Stage 2 — Skin Chemistry (Medium Range). Once a mosquito follows the CO₂ plume to your general area, it switches to secondary chemical cues from your skin. The big ones are lactic acid (produced by your muscles, especially during physical activity), octenol (a compound found in both sweat and breath), and ammonia. Published research has shown that adding lactic acid or octenol to CO₂ sources increases mosquito attraction by up to 13 times. This is why you get eaten alive after hiking to your stand — your body is pumping out lactic acid from the exertion. Stage 3 — Heat and Moisture (Close Range). At close range — just a few feet — mosquitoes’ home in on body heat and moisture from your skin. This is the final approach vector before they land and bite. Where Citronella Intervenes. Citronella disrupts Stages 1 and 2. The active compounds — primarily citronellal, citronellal, and geraniol — mask the CO₂ and lactic acid signatures that mosquitoes use to locate you. Citronella doesn’t kill mosquitoes. It makes you invisible to them. They can’t lock onto your scent trail because the citronella compounds overwhelm the chemical cues they’re searching for. This is why Odin’s citronella beads work differently than a candle or a skin-applied spray. A citronella candle creates a small zone of scent that dissipates quickly in open air. A skin spray evaporates within 20 minutes. Odin’s biodegradable polymer beads release citronellal, geraniol, and other active compounds continuously — the same slow-release technology we use in our hunting scent products. You’re not re-applying every 20 minutes. You’re deploying a sustained repellent zone that lasts the equivalent of 30 days of continuous exposure. Citronella for Camping & Outdoor Living Odin’s citronella isn’t just for hunters. The same slow-release technology that keeps mosquitoes off you in a Treestand works just as well at a campsite, on a patio, or in a backyard workshop. For camping, place mesh bags of citronella beads around your tent perimeter, near cooking areas, and at seating locations. The liquid citronella can also be spritzed around your campsite perimeter, adhering to foliage, brush and trees, for an immediate scent barrier. Unlike a citronella candle — which requires an open flame, burns for a few hours, and goes out when you go to sleep — the beads keep working overnight while you’re in the tent. We’ve had customers use them in garages, workshops, covered porches, and fishing boats. One customer hangs a mesh bag in his workshop and reports zero mosquitoes all season. The common thread: anywhere you’re stationary and don’t want to keep slapping bugs or re-applying spray. Odin’s is a great answer. And because the beads only release scent when exposed to air, the economics are better than you’d think. Use them for a weekend camping trip, seal the mesh bag in a Ziplock when you’re done, and they’re ready for next time with no loss of potency. The equivalent of 30 days of continuous use means one bag can cover multiple trips across an entire summer. Perfect for Turkey Season and Early Bow Season Spring turkey season (April–May in most states) and early bow season (August–September) coincide with peak mosquito activity. These are exactly the situations where hunters need bug protection but can’t afford to smell like chemicals or continually re-applying a spray or a lotion. Just put 2-3 tablespoons of Odin’s Citronella in a sheer bag and hang it from your vest. Easy.  Effective. GAME ON.   FAQs   Q: How do mosquitoes find you in the first place? Mosquitoes locate hosts using a combination of carbon dioxide from your breath (detected from over 150 feet away), lactic acid and octenol from your skin and sweat, and body heat at close range. Physical activity increases lactic acid production, which is why mosquitoes are especially aggressive after you’ve been hiking or setting up camp. Citronella-based repellents work by masking these chemical signals, making it harder for mosquitoes to zero in on your location. Q: Is citronella safe for skin contact? Citronella oil is registered with the EPA as a biopesticide with a non-toxic mode of action. Odin’s citronella beads are designed to be deployed around your position rather than applied to skin, which eliminates the skin-contact question entirely. The liquid can be spritzed on foliage and on the ground. If you do get it on your hands, it’s plant-derived and washes off easily. Q: Why do Odin’s citronella beads last longer than sprays or candles? Traditional citronella products — candles, skin sprays, and lotions — rely on evaporation to disperse the active compounds. That’s why they wear off in 20 minutes to a few hours. Odin’s biodegradable polymer beads encapsulate the citronella compounds and release them gradually through controlled diffusion. It’s the same patented delivery technology we use for our hunting scent products. The result is sustained, hands-free mosquito protection for the equivalent of 30 days, not 30 minutes. Q: Does citronella work in a hunting blind? It works exceptionally well in a hunting blind. The enclosed or semi-enclosed space concentrates the citronella scent, creating a stronger repellent zone than you’d get in open air. Hang a mesh bag of beads from the ceiling or a corner of the blind. Customers have reported coming back to their blind days later and finding it completely mosquito-free. One mesh bag in a blind can last an entire season.   Q: Can deer smell Deet mosquito spray? Yes. DEET-based mosquito repellents produce a strong chemical odor that deer and other game animals can detect at significant distances. Citronella-based repellents like Odin’s produce a milder, naturally derived scent that is far less alarming to game. Q: What is the best bug repellent for deer hunting? The best bug repellent for deer hunting is one that effectively repels mosquitoes without alerting game. Odin’s citronella scent beads are DEET-free, scent-smart, and deploy around your position rather than on your body — creating a repellent zone without contaminating your clothing or skin with detectable chemicals. Q: What can I use to keep mosquitos away while turkey hunting? Put 2-3 tablespoons in a sheer bag and hang it from your clothing. If in a stationary position, squirt some Citronella liquid on the foliage near you – it adds more scent barrier around you. Q: How long do Odin’s citronella beads last? Odin’s citronella scent beads use the same 30-day biodegradable polymer technology as our hunting scent products. Once deployed, they continue repelling mosquitoes for the “equivalent” of 30-days. Q: When would I need mosquito protection for 30-days? We have had some great reviews from customer who have, for example, hung a mesh bag of Citronella beads in their hunting blind.  When they go back (the next day or next week), there are no mosquito to greet them. Another use is a customer who hangs them in his garage (where he has a workshop), and no mosquitoes are there to bother him. Q: Can I use them multiple times? Yes! Remember, the “equivalent” of 30-days is 720 hours.  If they are in a mesh bag, put the bag with the beads in a Ziplock bag – roll it tight and close it - and it will be ready to use the next time you need it. It does not lose potency when not exposed to air. Q: What can I do if the mosquitoes are really bad? If the beads and the liquid don’t do it...go inside and drink a beer. Q:  Can it be used with attractants? Absolutely. Citronella keeps you bug-free while attractants like Berry, Pear, or Scrape Blend focus on pulling in game.
