We also know from religious texts that, among the ancient kings of Israel, cistus was one of the five sacred aromas of holy anointing. Many ancient peoples mixed cistus with myrrh and frankincense to make perfume and incense, and it has been used since the Middle Ages to treat wounds, ulcers, and other skin conditions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cistus is said to draw energy inward and break open stagnant states of mind, exposing core issues underlying a range of conditions. Cistus not only has a long history of use, but an intriguing origin story as well. The legend goes that the healing properties of cistus were discovered thousands of years ago when shepherds worked to remove the gum of cistus plants from the coats of their grazing sheep and goats. After doing this, they noticed that where the gum had touched the cuts on their hands, their wounds healed quicker than normal.
