Circe's Hair-Sword Inspired by the Greek Goddess Circe. Goddess of witchcraft, magic, and transformation A walk through the art: At the top, a mandrake plant rests against a crescent moon. The moon represents the divine feminine. Kirkaía ríza, or the mandrake plant, is named directly after Circe. It is a plant famous for its powerful narcotic and hallucinogenic properties due to alkaloids like scopolamine and atropine, used historically in magic and medicine for sleep, anesthesia, and inducing unconsciousness. In the Odyssey, Odysseus's men landed on Circe's island, Aeaea, and were invited to Circe's palace for a feast. Circe offered them a drink, called cycaeon, made with mandrake to make them forget their homes. One of the men was suspicious, didn't partake, warned Odysseus who, with the help of Hermes, was able to thwart Circe's plan. Aftwerward's the men stayed with Circle on her island for a year and she later helped them on the continuing of their journey. Down the blade is are two sets of chalices with their potions draining into one another on a an infinite loop. The chalice, a key symbol of Circe’s rituals, represents the sacred and ceremonial aspects of her magic. In ancient practices, chalices were used to hold enchanted potions and brews. For Circe, it was also a tool she used in her attempt to enchant Odysseus.
