As a building block for phosphatidylcholine, choline supports cell membrane integrity and cell signaling, fat digestion and liver function and lipid metabolism.* In the liver, choline-derived phosphatidylcholine helps transform VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) particles into water-loving molecules that can shuttle triglycerides through the bloodstream to fat cells for storage or muscle cells for immediate use. Choline is also a building block for acetylcholine, an important biochemical messenger for nerve cell communication.* Yet the body’s biggest demand for choline is as a source of methyl groups needed not only for healthy cell function, but also for gene expression, detoxification, and more. Choline is even at the core of a healthy homocysteine metabolism, which is an emerging biomarker for heart health.* Choline SR can be part of a pre- or post-natal supplement plan to help mothers-to-be and new moms fill any nutrient gap between what they consume and what a baby’s brain needs to thrive.* Choline plays a key role in fetal development, especially brain development, which is particularly rapid during the third trimester of pregnancy. For this reason, the recommended intake for choline is high for pregnant women (450 mg/day) and even higher for women who are nursing (550 mg/day).
