'Chokule' from Mask Series

Limited Edition Print from Mask Series by Jay Sharpe Part of Jay Sharpe's celebrated Mask Series, this limited edition fine art print draws inspiration from the ceremonial masks of the Chokwe people of Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia. These powerful cultural symbols have long been used to honor ancestors, celebrate fertility, and pass down community values through initiation ceremonies and storytelling traditions. The artwork references the iconic Mwana Pwo and Chihongo masks. Mwana Pwo, meaning "young woman," represents a founding female ancestor and honors women's fertility, beauty, and the matrilineal traditions of Chokwe society. Chihongo serves as its male counterpart, embodying leadership, prosperity, strength, and ancestral power. Together, these figures symbolize balance, continuity, and the well-being of the community. Blending historical inspiration with contemporary artistic expression, this print invites viewers to explore the enduring stories, values, and cultural significance embodied within these ceremonial forms.
