Cheng-Khee Chee: Marbleizing and Monoprinting Technique

In this art instruction video, Cheng-Khee Chee demonstrates how Marbleizing and Monoprinting Techniques can be combined to create the otherworldly dream-like imagery that characterize his paintings. The video contains instructions for selecting, handling and using materials throughout the process.   In this art instruction video, master watercolor artist, Cheng-Khee Chee demonstrates the most intuitive and personal of his styles: Marbleizing plus Mono Printing. These wonderful techniques create a dynamic otherworldly ground that Chee manipulates to create dream-like imagery and are the basis of some of his prize winning paintings. In this art video you learn what materials to select, how to handle the delicate paper, mount the painting, manipulate the shapes and the delicate touch needed to keep the integrity of the paper. Both techniques demonstrated require some contemplation. Cheng-Khee Chee brings his first demonstration to conclusion, however, the marbleizing plus mono-printing requires weeks, sometimes years of living with the painting. He discusses his process so that you may begin your own unique personal journey. In this, the final in a six-part series, Cheng-Khee Chee demonstrates the most intuitive of his styles: marbleizing, and marbleizing plus monoprinting. Using water and free-flowing ink, he creates a dynamic ambiguity, an otherworldliness that reflects his dreams and aspirations. The technique looks deceptively simple, yet it soon becomes apparent that Chee's years of experience and communication with his inner voice, guide his work toward fine art. In his marbleizing demonstration, Chee floats black in a tub of water and transfers it to rice paper to create a dramatic, mystical landscape. He discusses the importance of choosing the paper, paste, and ink that allow your abstraction to flow freely. You'll also learn how to choose the marbled pattern that best fits your purpose and enhance it to reflect your intuition and sense of design. Chee finishes the demonstration by highlighting the marbled pattern with watercolor and gouache. Chee does not conclude the second demonstration on film. His journey from marbleizing to a finished monoprinting work requires weeks or even years of personal contemplation in his studio. Instead of leading you step-by-step to a finished painting, Chee teaches you the skills and philosophy that will help you discover your own path toward personal expression.
