Charlatans Triptych (3 Pieces)

The Charlatans triptych (Family Dog 63, 67, and 72) are all 1st printings and represents a singular achievement in psychedelic poster art, conceived as a unified work spanning three consecutive Avalon Ballroom engagements in May, June, and July of 1967. The collaboration between designers Rick Griffin and Robert Fried, utilizing Herb Greene's atmospheric band photography, produced what many scholars consider the definitive visual document of San Francisco's proto-psychedelic aesthetic. The Victorian typography and sepia-toned imagery deliberately evoked nineteenth-century American vernacular design, reflecting The Charlatans' pioneering fusion of Americana and psychedelia. This aesthetic, developed during the band's 1965 residency at Virginia City's Red Dog Saloon, predated and influenced the entire San Francisco rock scene. The offset lithographic technique employed allows for subtle tonal gradation in the photographic reproductions while maintaining the bold graphic impact essential to street-level concert promotion. As primary source documents from the Summer of Love, these posters hold significance beyond their considerable artistic merit. The supporting act rosters, including the 13th Floor Elevators and Blue Cheer, provide a snapshot of the San Francisco music ecosystem at its creative zenith. Complete triptych sets remain rare in the collector market. Size: 21.75" x 13.5" Artist: Rick Griffin and Robert Fried Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear, fading and toning.
