Celtic Pride Siberian Cypress

Celtic Pride Siberian Cypress (Microbiota decussata 'Prides')Celtic Pride Siberian Cypress is a tough, low-growing evergreen that spreads into a soft, fern-like carpet and makes hard edges feel calmer and more finished. It is especially valuable in cold climates, where it stays reliable and provides year-round structure when many groundcovers struggle. The foliage looks fresh green through the growing season, then shifts to rich bronze and russet tones in winter for extra seasonal interest. Use it to cover ground with confidence, reduce weeds, and create a smoother transition between beds, paths, and larger shrubs. Distinctive FeaturesThis spreading conifer forms a dense, prostrate to gently mounding mat with feathery, flat sprays that feel softer than typical junipers. Growth is low and wide, with tips that often nod, creating a relaxed, natural look that still reads as intentional. Summer color is green, while cold weather brings bronzy to coppery, sometimes purplish winter tones that add depth when the landscape is otherwise quiet. It is grown for evergreen texture and seasonal color rather than flowers, and it is known for strong cold hardiness and solid landscape durability. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best density in sun and good performance in light shade. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it performs best in average soils that do not stay waterlogged. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide moderate moisture, with good drought tolerance once established. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 2 to 7. Humidity: Prefers cooler summer conditions and can be less happy in very hot, humid climates. Drainage: Avoid poorly drained sites, because persistent wet soil can lead to decline. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a broad, textured evergreen sweep in the foreground where the winter bronze tones can be appreciated up close. Groundcover: Plant as a weed-suppressing carpet on slopes and open beds where a soft, low evergreen layer is needed. Erosion Control: Use on banks and grades to help stabilize soil with a dense, spreading root system. Edging: Line paths and bed edges to create a clean, evergreen boundary that stays low and tidy. Mass Planting: Group plants to build a unified, low-maintenance evergreen blanket with strong winter interest. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Provide consistent moisture the first season, then water during extended drought to keep foliage looking its best. Pruning: Prune lightly in spring to shape or contain spread, because heavy pruning into old wood can reduce recovery. Mulching: Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch off the stems to maintain airflow. Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly if needed, because excessive feeding can encourage weaker, less compact growth. Site Selection: Prioritize drainage and airflow to support long-term health and cleaner winter color. Why Choose Celtic Pride Siberian Cypress? Cold Hardiness: Reliable evergreen coverage in very cold winters, making it a strong choice for northern landscapes. Seasonal Color: Green summer foliage shifts to rich bronze and russet tones for standout winter interest. Low, Spreading Habit: Typically grows about 1 to 3 feet tall and spreads about 4 to 6 feet wide over time. Deer Resistance: Often considered deer resistant, supporting better success in high-pressure areas. Groundcover Performance: Creates a soft, fern-like mat that suppresses weeds and smooths transitions in the landscape. If you want a dependable evergreen groundcover with real winter character, Celtic Pride Siberian Cypress is a strong pick. Give it sun to light shade, excellent drainage, and steady moisture while it establishes. Once settled, it becomes a low-maintenance, wide-spreading carpet that holds the landscape together in every season.
