Plate 9537 - Botanical Print

Curtis's Botanical Magazine - Plate 9537 Family: Violaceae • Native Region: Greece • Publication Date: January 1st, 1934 Distribution: -North Macedonia • Tab Author: W. B. TURRILL Botanical Description Viola allchariensis was described by Beck from material collected by D rfler on stony slopes at Allchar (Al ar); a short distance to the north of the present boundary of Yugo- slavia with Greece. It is well-known that D rfler usually collected and most carefully prepared as herbarium specimens the finest, and often the largest-flowered, plants he could find. Further, Allchar is a well-known mining centre, and the plants were collected from arsenical ground. These facts by themselves make it very difficult to judge the value of the differences between the so-called varieties. In addition to the excellent sheets of D rfler's collecting there is a sheet at Kew collected at Allchar in 1921 by the late Prof. N. Ko anin. This has smaller flowers than the original material and links the var. typica with the var. Herzogii. There seems, if references in literature be correct, to be no geographical separation between the varieties. Specimens of var. Herzogii have been seen from Drezilovo (below Mt. Pepeljak), cal- careous rocks and stones, and from between Karadjica and Jakupica. The material figured is from plants grown from seed collected by the Rev. and Mrs. H. P. Thompson in the latter area. These localities are all west of Veles and south of Skoplje ( sk b) and thus considerably to the north of Allchar. On the other hand, V. Mrkvickiana was described from Mt. Sokal, Nidje Planina, not far from Allchar, and Becker has reduced this to the var. Herzogii. It is not unlikely that the variety Herzogii is either really the common and usual form or variety of the species and that the var. typica is an ecad or ecotype produced or selected by the.
