Plate 9534 - Rubus tricolor

Curtis's Botanical Magazine - Plate 9534 Rubus tricolor Family: Rosaceae • Native Region: China • Publication Date: January 1st, 1934 Distribution: -China; Yunnan and Szechwan • Tab Author: J. R. SEALY Botanical Description Years later was described as R. polytrichus by Franchet, who was evidently unaware that the same name had been used previously for another, and different species.* In 1903 Wilson found the plant in Szechwan, on Wa-shan the sister mountain to the sacred Omei-shan (Veitch Expedi- tion no. 3471), and in 1910 his specimens were described by Focke as a new species, R. tricolor. Focke had apparently not seen material of Franchet's R. polytrichus and was not aware of the fact that it was identical with his new species. Franchet's name, however, cannot be used for the plant, since it is a later homonym of R. polytrichus Progel, and hence the species takes the name R. tricolor. Wilson collected it again, in the same locality, in 1908 when on an expedition for the Arnold Arboretum (no. 828) and he also obtained seeds from which the species was intro- duced into cultivation. Forrest and Handel-Mazzetti have both collected R. tricolor in Yunnan, the former near Tali, and the latter further south- east near Yunnan-fu. Handel-Mazzetti has also found it between Yenyuan and the Yalung river in southern Szechwan about half-way between Tali and Wa-shan. In its home it grows on rocks and in scrub at 1800-3600 metres. *R. polytrichus Progel in Ber. Bot. Ver. Landshut, VIII. 102 (1882).
