Plate 9351 - Jasminum farreri

Curtis's Botanical Magazine - Plate 9351 Jasminum farreri Family: OLEACEAE • Tribe: JASMINOIDEAE • Native Region: Burma • Publication Date: April 3rd, 1934 Distribution: Armenia and Iraq (Kurdistan). • Tab Author: E. MILNE-REDHEAD. Botanical Description This alternate-leaved Jasmine was collected by Farrer on April 25th, 1919, at 2286 m., on an open arid outcrop of limestone ridge just below the D?k Bungalow," Hpimaw Hill, Upper Burma (F.867), and, so far as can be ascertained, has never been collected since in that or any other locality. Seeds and dried specimens were sent to the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, where the plant was tentatively named very near J. Giraldii Diels." This name subsequently became more definitely attached to the plant and it is so labelled in gardens where it is now growing. On comparing, however, Farrer's original dried material with authentic specimens of J. Giraldii collected by Girald in Shensi and with material of allied species, it is evident that the present plant represents an undescribed species, to which the name Jasminum Farreri has here been assigned. It is, indeed, hardly surprising that plants from such widely different botanical regions as N. China and Upper Burma should prove to be distinct species. J. Farreri is allied to a number of species of the series Alternifolia, especially to J. Giraldii Diels, J. humile L. (in the. Synonyms Syn. J. Giraldii Cox, Plant. Introd. Reg. Farrer, 66 (1930); Bean, Trees and Shrubs Hardy Brit. Isles, III. 195 (1933)-non Diels.
