Each stem of Cattleya mossiae var. semi alba typically bears two to three of these resplendent blooms, making it a captivating sight when in full bloom. Cultivating Tips: Growing Season and Growth Patterns: Cattleya mossiae var. semi alba flowers in the spring, which means it enters its growing phase in midsummer. This growth phase can extend into October, during which it usually produces new roots from the freshly developed growths. It is advisable to repot the orchid during this time, ensuring it has ample time to establish itself before the next blooming season. Repotting: Repotting should only be performed when the orchid begins to show signs of new root growth from the latest pseudobulb or growth. Be cautious not to disrupt the root system unnecessarily, as Cattleya mossiae prefers to be slightly root-bound. Watering: During its active growth period in summer and early autumn, Cattleya mossiae var. semi alba appreciates generous watering. However, it's crucial to allow the orchid to dry out thoroughly between watering sessions. When you do water, ensure that all the roots within the container receive a thorough soaking. Light and Air: This orchid variety thrives in bright, filtered sunlight. It requires plenty of air circulation and benefits from increased sun exposure, which encourages more abundant flowering. However, be cautious not to subject it to too much direct sunlight, as this can cause the leaves to become overly warm. Temperature: Maintain a typical cattleya temperature range for Cattleya mossiae var. semi alba. Keep nighttime temperatures around 58°F (14-15°C) and allow daytime temperatures to reach up to 85°F (29-30°C). This temperature variation helps mimic its natural habitat conditions and promotes healthy growth. Fertilization: While fertilization is not mandatory for growth or flowering, it can enhance the plant's health, especially when grown in bark-based potting mixes. A soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer diluted to one-quarter teaspoonful per gallon of water is recommended. Apply this solution weekly during the active growth period in August and September, using approximately a cupful per plant per watering. Avoid slow-release fertilizers to prevent nitrogen release during the dormant phase, which could harm the plant. This is a blooming size in a 5” pot, about 1 to 2 years to bloom. Grown from Seed! Limited! Incorporating these care guidelines into your orchid cultivation routine will help ensure that your Cattleya mossiae var. semi alba thrives and continues to grace your collection with its magnificent snow-white blooms year after year.
