Cane Creek Hellbender 70 Slam Integrated Headset — IS42/28.6 | IS52/40, Black (1-1/8" to 1.5")

The Cane Creek Hellbender 70 Slam is a premium integrated headset built for riders who want their bars as low as possible without sacrificing bearing life or proper preload. It uses stainless Hellbender bearings and ultra-low stack covers to deliver long-term durability in a true “slam it” configuration. Key Functional Details Integrated headset for tapered steerers (1-1/8" to 1.5") SHIS: IS42/28.6 | IS52/40 Premium stainless steel Hellbender sealed cartridge bearings 6061-T6 aluminum cups and covers Ultra-low stack “Slam” top cover design Bearing angle: 36° / 45° Black finish Designed for maximum durability with minimal stack height Compatibility & Technical Notes Fits frames designed for IS42 upper / IS52 lower integrated headsets Designed for tapered forks (28.6mm upper / 40mm crown race) Integrated style only — bearings sit directly in the frame NOT compatible with ZS or EC headset frames NOT compatible with straight 1-1/8" frames unless lower is IS52 Requires proper crown race installation Service / Ownership Context This is a high-end headset meant for aggressive trail, enduro, gravel, and performance builds. Stainless Hellbender bearings offer excellent corrosion resistance, but regular inspection and light greasing of contact surfaces will maximize lifespan. Fit & Use Signals Good Fit: Performance bikes with IS42/IS52 frames where low stack height and long bearing life matter. Not A Fit: Frames requiring Zero Stack (ZS) or External Cup (EC) headsets, or non-tapered forks. This is the “slam it” version of Hellbender. Main reason people buy this is stack height. Top cover is super low compared to 40 Series or standard Hellbender. Stainless bearings hold up way better in wet riding, especially on gravel and trail bikes. Biggest mistake is confusing IS with ZS. This is integrated only — frame must be IS42/IS52. 36/45 bearing angles matter. Don’t mix with 45/45 headsets. Install tip: clean frame bearing seats carefully, light grease on interfaces, press crown race square. Failures usually come from dirty seats or dry installs, not the bearings themselves. Riders love how quiet these stay and how long they last. Who this is really for: riders chasing low stack + longevity, enduro bikes, gravel bikes seeing bad weather. Who should avoid: anyone without IS42/IS52 frames or riders who don’t care about stack height. Mechanic advice: confirm SHIS before selling, preload carefully, recheck after first ride.
