The flag was designed by William Todd (nephew of Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of Abraham Lincoln). Officially adopted in 1912, the bear flag was around before then. In 1846, band of settlers marched on the Mexican garrison at Sonoma and took the commandant prisoner. They issued a proclamation which declared California to be a Republic independent of Mexico. The grizzly bear on the flag represents a symbol of great strength while the star made reference to the Lone Star of Texas. The red striped represents courage, the red star located on the top left represents sovereignty, the white background of the flag represents purity. The words "California Republic" was placed beneath the star and the bear.     Read more about the history of the California State Flag at State of California Capital Museum.
