Botanical Name: Calendula officinalis Common Names: Pot Marigold, Garden Marigold Family: Asteraceae Origin: Egypt Calendula is an annual herb celebrated for its bright golden-orange petals and sunny disposition. Its blooms follow the rhythm of the sun — opening in the morning and closing at dusk or on cloudy days — earning it a place in folklore as a plant of warmth and vitality. Historical & Cultural Background: Calendula has been a staple in gardens and kitchens for centuries. In medieval Europe, it was called “poor man’s saffron” and used to add golden color to soups, breads, and cheeses. Ancient Egyptians admired it for its vitality, while Ayurvedic and traditional European herbalists valued it as a multipurpose household flower. Its petals were also used in ceremonial garlands in India, religious offerings in South America, and as a natural dye for fabrics. During the American Civil War, calendula was reportedly used to add color and scent to linens and bedding. Traditional & Modern Applications: Infused into oils for use in creams, salves, and body care recipes Added to herbal teas for color and mild flavor Used as a decorative garnish for salads, cakes, and cocktails Incorporated into natural dyes for textiles and cosmetics Harvest & Processing: Calendula flowers are hand-harvested during the warmest part of the day to capture their vibrant color and aromatic compounds. They are then carefully dried at low temperatures to maintain quality. Precautions: Individuals allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family (such as chamomile, ragweed, or daisies) should exercise caution. Consult with a qualified healthcare provider before use if pregnant, nursing, or taking medications. *This information has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
