Calathea Network (Calathea musaica)

T he Calathea Network, botanically recognized as Goeppertia kegelijanii (formerly known as Calathea musaica), is a vibrant tropical evergreen perennial prized for its intricate, maze-like glossy leaf pattern of fine crisscrossing lines that resemble a hand-drawn mosaic network or digital grid. This living work of art has earned it popular names such as Network Plant, Mosaic Plant, Mosaic calathea, and Network Prayer Plant, making it a favorite among houseplant enthusiasts, interior designers, and rare plant collectors alike.  As a member of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae), its leaves gently rise in the evening and lower again during the day, a fascinating movement known as nyctinasty, which adds even more character to this remarkable species.  Each glossy, oval leaf has a light green background covered with thin, dark green lines that form a unique net-like or mosaic pattern. New leaves emerge tightly rolled before slowly opening to reveal their detailed markings, making each new leaf an exciting addition. The plant's dense, bushy foliage stays attractive throughout the year, adding texture, freshness, and tropical beauty to any indoor space. When grown indoors, this Network calathea can reach up to 2 feet tall and about 2 feet wide, making it an ideal choice for bright living rooms, offices, sunrooms, and enclosed patios. In frost-free outdoor climates, however, mature plants can grow in lush clumps and may develop into substantial low-growing landscape accents. Its upright, compact growth habit and manageable size allow it to function as both a colorful accent plant and a striking focal point. The Musaica calathea rarely blooms indoors, but mature specimens in ideal conditions can produce small, inconspicuous white flowers hidden beneath the dense canopy during the spring and summer. These blooms are relatively secondary compared to the breathtakingly detailed leaves and are often overlooked by collectors. Native to the humid rainforest understories of Brazil, its remarkable foliage, pet-friendly nature, manageable size, and year-round ornamental appeal have made it one of the most sought-after tropical houseplants worldwide. Whether displayed in a decorative pot indoors or incorporated into a lush tropical garden, Goeppertia kegeljanii adds sophisticated texture, natural artistry, and timeless elegance to any plant collection.  When and How to Water Your Calathea Network It prefers a consistent watering schedule and thrives when its soil remains evenly moist but never soggy. Rather than allowing the soil to completely dry out like a succulent, only allow the top 1 inch of potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering or leaving the pot sitting in stagnant water, as saturated soil can quickly cause root rot and leaf drop. The Calathea network should typically be watered every 1–2 weeks during the active growing season (March–September) and every 2 weeks during the dormant winter season (October–February), adjusting as needed based on your indoor temperature, pot type, and soil dryness.  During the spring and summer, water your plant when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. Water thoroughly until excess water drains freely from the bottom of the pot, then promptly empty the saucer so the roots are not left sitting in water. During the fall and winter, reduce watering because the plant's growth naturally slows down and the soil takes longer to dry out. Allow the top layer of the potting mix to dry out before watering again, and avoid keeping the soil wet for extended periods to keep the delicate root system healthy.  Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Network Plant  When growing indoors, place your Calathea plant in bright, indirect light for 6–8 hours each day to encourage vibrant mosaic patterning and sturdy stems. A spot right next to an east-facing window or a few feet away from a bright south- or west-facing window is ideal. Protect the foliage from intense, unshaded afternoon sun, which can fade the brilliant chartreuse tones and burn the leaves.  When grown outdoors, it performs best in partial shade to deep filtered sun in USDA Hardiness Zones 10–11, where temperatures remain warm year-round. Place it on a bright covered patio, a shaded porch, or within a protected garden bed. In cooler climates, grow it in a container so you can easily bring it indoors before autumn temperatures fall below 60°F. The dazzling coloration of the foliage develops best when the plant receives plenty of bright, indirect light. Too little light can slow its growth and cause the new leaves to lose their crisp, geometric clarity, making the signature matrix effect look muddy over time. On the other hand, harsh, direct afternoon sun through a window may easily scorch the leaves. Providing a consistent balance of bright filtered light is the most important factor for maintaining intense variegation and bushy growth. Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs  The Calathea musaica grows best in a rich, loose, well-draining potting mix that retains just enough moisture while allowing excess water to drain away easily. Planting them in heavy, ordinary garden soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and root issues. Instead, use a high-quality peat- or coco-coir-based potting soil amended with perlite, or our specialized potting mix, which is designed to promote strong root development and healthy tropical growth.  To support lush foliage and continuous new leaf production, feed your plant with a balanced liquid NPK fertilizer during the spring and summer growing season. Apply the fertilizer at half-strength every 4–6 weeks. Stop fertilizing entirely during the fall and winter months when the plant enters its natural resting phase and does not require extra nutrients. How to Grow Indoors as a Houseplant The Calathea network makes an outstanding houseplant, admired for its structural, patterned leaves that bring an instant tropical paradise feel to indoor spaces. It grows best in indoor temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and should be strictly protected from sudden temperature drops and cold drafts. It thrives in humidity levels of 50% or higher, which helps keep its foliage glossy, flexible, and firmly attached to the petioles. This tropical plant benefits from extra humidity provided by a nearby humidifier, a pebble tray filled with water, or by grouping it alongside your other favorite humidity-loving houseplants. The Network calathea should be kept far away from drafty exterior doorways, open winter windows, heating vents, and air conditioners, as dry air and sudden temperature shocks can stress the plant and cause it to crisp or drop its lower leaves. Hardiness Zone & More In the United States, this Network prayer plant is most widely enjoyed as an indoor houseplant. Outdoors, it can live in the ground year-round only in completely frost-free tropical environments like southern Florida, southern California, and Hawaii within USDA Hardiness Zones 10–11. In these regions, it makes a fantastic accent groundcover for bright courtyards, entryways, and vibrant shaded garden borders.  It thrives in steady warmth between 65°F and 85°F and will suffer damage if exposed to temperatures below 55°F. It prefers moderate to high humidity, which keeps the leaf margins from drying out. While it appreciates good air movement, it should be shielded from strong, drying winds that can quickly sap moisture from its broad foliage. Wildlife – Calathea Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators When grown outdoors in tropical or subtropical climates, these subtle blooms provide a modest source of nectar and pollen. They can occasionally attract small garden helpers, including beneficial beetles, butterflies, curious honeybees, tiny gnats, and various small pollinating insects.  According to the ASPCA, the entire Goeppertia (formerly Calathea) genus is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Unlike many other colorful tropical plants, its sap is completely safe, making it a pet-friendly choice for households with curious pets. However, it is still best styled on high plant stands, tables, or countertops to keep its ornamental leaves looking pristine. How to Propagate Your Calathea Musaica You can propagate your plant easily through root division during the warm spring or early summer months when repotting. Gently remove the mature plant from its container and shake away loose soil to expose the root network. Locate a natural offset or cluster with its own independent root system and several healthy leaves. Use a clean, sterile blade to carefully separate the roots. Plant the newly divided section into a small pot filled with fresh, lightweight potting mix. Keep the new division in a warm, highly humid spot with bright indirect light until it establishes itself. Potting and Repotting Your Plant  This colorful tropical plant likes to be relatively settled in its container and doesn't require frequent disturbance. Repot your Calathea network plant only every 2 years during the spring, or whenever you notice the roots circling tightly around the bottom of the pot or growing out of the drainage holes. Always choose a container with functional drainage holes at the bottom to let excess water escape. Move up only one pot size at a time (such as from a 4-inch pot to a 6-inch pot) to prevent excess surrounding soil from holding onto too much water. When repotting is complete, fill in the gaps with fresh, well-draining soil, water lightly, and place it back in its favorite bright spot.  Key Takeaways The Calathea network is a widely grown tropical houseplant and ornamental clump-former prized for its vibrant foliage, geometric lines, and ability to brighten indoor and sheltered outdoor spaces year-round. Its glossy green leaves are generously etched with a bright, pale chartreuse grid, creating the appearance of a living mosaic and providing continuous ornamental interest without relying on flowers. The plant develops its crispest markings and most vibrant structure when grown in consistent indirect light, making it an excellent choice for shaded windows, humid bathrooms, and tropical landscapes. Mature plants may occasionally produce tiny white flowers near the base of the stems, although they are generally grown for their striking foliage rather than their blooms. With its compact growth habit, dense foliage, and eye-catching patterns, the Network plant serves as a stunning focal point that brings year-round tropical character to homes, patios, and gardens.
