Calathea 'Dottie' Houseplant

Calathea ‘Dottie’ – A Bold and Dramatic Peacock Plant Calathea ‘Dottie’ is for plant lovers who want something striking. Deep, almost black leaves with vibrant pink outlines make this variety stand out in any collection. It’s one of the most dramatic Calatheas you can own, with a color contrast that looks almost unreal. If you’re drawn to plants that feel a little mysterious, a little bold, and completely unique—this is the one. Unlike many other Calatheas that feature a mix of greens and purples, ‘Dottie’ stays consistently dark, with neon-like fuchsia markings tracing its leaves. It thrives in a warm, humid environment and moves its leaves throughout the day, a characteristic of prayer plants. If you enjoy the ritual of tending to plants and watching them respond, ‘Dottie’ will not disappoint. What Makes Calathea ‘Dottie’ Special? Striking Dark Foliage with Pink Highlights: Most Calatheas have intricate leaf patterns, but ‘Dottie’ takes it to the next level with its nearly black leaves. The hot pink outline that traces each leaf is so vivid it almost glows. New leaves unfurl with a deep burgundy tone before darkening as they mature. A True Low-Light Beauty: Some plants struggle in lower-light conditions, but Calathea ‘Dottie’ thrives. If you have a space without direct sunlight—like an office, bedroom, or a corner of your living room—this plant will be perfectly happy. It Moves! Like other prayer plants, ‘Dottie’ raises and lowers its leaves throughout the day. In the evening, the leaves lift slightly, as if in prayer, then relax again by morning. This movement makes it feel almost alive in a way that static plants don’t. Pet-Friendly: Unlike many houseplants with bold foliage, Calatheas are non-toxic to cats and dogs. If you have pets that love to nibble on greenery, you won’t have to worry about ‘Dottie’ harming them. Humidity-Lover (Great for Bathrooms!): Calathea ‘Dottie’ loves moisture, making it an excellent plant for kitchens or bathrooms where humidity is naturally higher. If your home is on the drier side, regular misting or a pebble tray will keep it happy. Where to Place Your Calathea ‘Dottie’ On a shelf or tabletop where its dark leaves create contrast. In a bathroom where humidity stays high. In a low-light office or bedroom to add color without needing bright sun. Near other humidity-loving plants like ferns, orchids, or monsteras for a lush indoor jungle. Is Calathea ‘Dottie’ Right for You? This plant is perfect if you: Love bold, unusual foliage.
