The film's complex plotting—involving multiple timeline visits and an alternate 1985 ruled by Biff Tannen—required audiences to pay careful attention while delivering the same adventure-comedy thrills as the original. The dystopian Biffhorrific timeline, where the villain used a sports almanac to become wealthy and powerful, has been eerily prescient about certain real-world political developments. Nike actually produced self-lacing shoes based on the film's design, and the hoverboard remains one of cinema's most coveted fictional technologies.
