English Burr Walnut Table Cabinet / Correspondence Casket with Perpetual Calendar Circa 1840–1860

English Burr Walnut Table Cabinet / Correspondence Casket with Perpetual Calendar Circa 1840–1860 England   An exceptional mid 19th century English table cabinet, crafted in richly figured burr walnut and mounted with finely engraved gilt brass strapwork in Gothic and foliate forms. The exterior immediately reflects the quality of early Victorian craftsmanship, with carefully selected and bookmatched veneer creating a symmetrical, flame like pattern across the doors.   The applied brass mounts are both decorative and architectural, echoing the Gothic Revival aesthetic that was highly fashionable in England during this period. The piece retains its original working key with tassel, an increasingly rare and desirable feature.   Opening the cabinet reveals a fully fitted correspondence interior, designed for daily use. Tiered compartments provide organized storage for letters and papers, while the upper section retains its original perpetual calendar with rotating cards for day, date, and month, a thoughtful feature tied to 19th century routines of writing and record keeping.   The interior doors add further depth and function. One side features a silk lined letter panel secured with brass studs, while the other includes a framed compartment, likely intended for a miniature portrait or personal keepsake. A lower drawer offers additional storage, completing a piece that is as practical as it is beautiful.   Its slightly more compact scale makes it especially versatile, ideal for a desk, library, or layered vignette, bringing both history and function into a space.   Condition Excellent antique condition Original working key present and functioning Interior fittings intact, including calendar components Light surface wear consistent with age Brass mounts show gentle patina Clean, stable, and ready for use   A rare and highly functional Victorian cabinet, embodying both craftsmanship and the daily rituals of 19th century life.
