Bursa Triggerfish

The Bursa Triggerfish, Sufflamen bursa, is a distinctive saltwater fish recognized for its compact, powerful body, gray to brown coloration, pale underside, and characteristic curved marking behind the head that resembles a scythe or boomerang. A pale diagonal line extends behind the mouth, while subtle blue coloration around the eye adds contrast. Juveniles and subadults often display a yellowish-tan to green tone within the distinctive shoulder marking, which becomes more subdued as the fish matures. Native throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, this species occurs from East Africa and the Indian Ocean eastward through northern Australia, Hawaii, the Marquesas, and Pitcairn Islands, extending north to southern Japan. It inhabits clear inner and outer reefs, including exposed reef flats and deeper seaward slopes. Intelligent, inquisitive, and increasingly territorial with maturity, the Bursa Triggerfish makes an engaging centerpiece for spacious fish-only and fish-only-with-live-rock aquariums. Quick Care Guide Care Level: Moderate Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons Temperament: Aggressive Diet: Omnivore Reef Safe: No Region: Indo-Pacific Scientific Name: Sufflamen bursa Tank Requirements The Bursa Triggerfish requires a spacious marine aquarium with substantial open swimming room and sturdy rockwork. Adults can reach approximately 10 inches, and a 125-gallon or larger aquarium provides appropriate long-term territory for this active, territorial species. Provide large caves, overhangs, and secure crevices where the fish can retreat when resting or startled. Like other triggerfish, it can erect and lock its dorsal spine to wedge itself securely into reef structure. Rockwork should be stable and firmly positioned because mature triggerfish may investigate, move, or overturn unsecured decorations. Leave adequate open space around the aquascape for swimming and feeding. Moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, and efficient filtration are recommended. Triggerfish are substantial feeders and can produce significant waste, making dependable biological filtration and regular maintenance especially important. Diet and Feeding The Bursa Triggerfish is an omnivore with an exceptionally varied natural diet. In the wild, it consumes crabs, mollusks, sea urchins, worms, tunicates, fish eggs, algae, detritus, and other reef-associated foods. Offer a varied captive diet including mysis shrimp, krill, chopped shrimp, clam, mussel, squid, and other quality marine seafood. High-quality triggerfish or carnivore pellets and balanced frozen marine blends can also be incorporated into the regular diet. Shell-on shrimp, clam, and mussel provide useful enrichment and encourage natural chewing behavior. Some spirulina-based foods or marine algae can also be offered periodically to reflect the plant material present in its natural diet. Feed once or twice daily, adjusting portions according to the fish's size, body condition, and overall aquarium stocking. Temperament and Tankmates The Bursa Triggerfish is territorial and should be considered aggressive, particularly as it matures. While individuals vary, established adults may intimidate or attack smaller, timid, or similarly territorial fish. Suitable tankmates include appropriately sized tangs, larger angelfish, rabbitfish, robust wrasses, groupers, and other confident marine fish capable of coexisting with an assertive triggerfish. Use considerable caution when combining it with other triggerfish. Multiple territorial trigger species require substantially larger aquariums, multiple secure territories, and careful species selection. Small fish and delicate community species are generally poor choices for a mature Bursa Triggerfish. Reef Compatibility The Bursa Triggerfish is not considered reef safe. Although healthy corals may not always be its primary food source, its natural feeding behavior places a wide variety of reef invertebrates at risk. Shrimp, crabs, hermit crabs, snails, clams, sea urchins, worms, and other crustaceans or mollusks may be hunted, crushed, or eaten. Sessile invertebrates can also be investigated or damaged during normal feeding and exploratory behavior. For predictable long-term housing, this species is best suited to a fish-only or fish-only-with-live-rock aquarium rather than a traditional reef system. Water Parameters Temperature: 75–80°F Specific Gravity: 1.024–1.026 pH: 8.1–8.4 Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH Stable conditions are more important than chasing exact numbers. Maintain consistent temperature and salinity along with excellent oxygenation, efficient biological filtration, and dependable overall water quality. Common Considerations Increasing territoriality: Adults can become considerably more assertive and should be housed with appropriately robust tankmates. Invertebrate predator: Shrimp, crabs, snails, clams, urchins, worms, and similar reef animals may become prey. Powerful teeth and jaws: Include appropriately sized hard or shell-on marine foods as part of a varied diet. Secure aquascaping: Rockwork and decorations should be firmly positioned because triggerfish may investigate or rearrange unsecured objects. Heavy feeding and waste production: Strong filtration and consistent maintenance are important for maintaining water quality around a mature specimen.
