A Decade of Expertise The Highland Green Mustang from the Bullitt movie is arguably the most iconic and recognizable Mustang of all time. At REC, we exist at the intersection of two worlds: the love and nerdiness for iconic vehicles, and the passion for watches. Naturally, we already knew the Bullitt Mustang well, but more than that, we’d admired it for years. It’s been on our minds for a long time. For more than a decade, we’ve been honoring icons, transforming the DNA of history’s finest machines into timepieces. Our track record includes Ayrton Senna’s F1 Lotus 98T, the legendary Porsche 956, and the first production GT40 car ever – alongside drift cars, spy planes, WWII aircraft, movie cars, off-roaders, and famous sports cars. Two Mustangs were used in the Bullitt movie, but only one was used for the legendary car chase. This was not an easy challenge, but we did the impossible and secured Bullitt DNA material from the 1968 Highland Green Fastback Mustang, VIN 8R02S125558 (aka Bullitt 558). Authenticated by Kevin Marti Auto Works as the real, famous stunt car from the movie. An irreplaceable piece of Bullitt DNA, which raced through the streets of San Francisco with the King of Cool behind the wheel, forms the Bullitt 558 timepiece. This one-of-a-kind collaboration, combining original Bullitt DNA with Swiss horological craftsmanship, is truly incredible. Read less Read more Setting the standard The Greatest Car Chase In Film History When Bullitt hit cinemas in 1968, car chases would never be the same again. Until then, action driving was usually a backdrop, a supporting act. But when Steve McQueen’s Highland Green ’68 Mustang Fastback launched through the streets of San Francisco, it rewrote the rulebook. The 10-minute chase sequence became the heartbeat of the film: pure, mechanical rhythm, edited to perfection, shot at real speed, and orchestrated with the precision of a symphony. There were no CGI tricks, no studio sets, and almost no stunt doubles. McQueen, already known as the “King of Cool,” insisted on driving much of the sequence himself. With the cameras bolted to the cars, the audience wasn’t watching actors pretending to chase, they were inside the chase. Director Peter Yates and cinematographer Bill Fraker turned San Francisco’s hills into a living rollercoaster. The crew used real streets and real danger. You could feel the weight transfer, the suspension bottoming out, the tires shredding, the engines roaring off the concrete. It had unfiltered authenticity, and audiences had never seen anything like it. The industry took note. Bullitt didn’t just inspire imitators; it set the standard. Every filmmaker since, from The French Connection and Ronin to The Bourne Identity and Baby Driver, measures their chase scenes against Bullitt. On every list, in every ranking, it remains the benchmark: the greatest car chase ever filmed. McQueen’s daring, discipline, and commitment to realism turned a police thriller into legend and made the car itself, the 1968 Highland Green Mustang, a cultural icon. It wasn’t just cinema. It was the moment when motion met emotion, and speed became story. Read less Read more Authenticated by specialists Two Bullitt Mustangs To survive McQueen’s brutal demands for realism, the production ordered two identical Highland Green Mustangs, VIN 8R02S125558 and VIN 8R02S125559. On the outside, they were identical. But on the inside, their roles were vastly different. While VIN 559 was kept mainly stock and did all the close-ups and normal driving, VIN 558 was transformed into the stunt beast, built to fly through San Francisco. It was fitted with a heavy-duty 4-speed manual transmission, a stiffened clutch, reinforced shock mounts, and custom coil springs to survive the impact of the jumps. These modifications, combined with Steve McQueen’s fearlessness and driving skill, enabled VIN 558 to be the Mustang that roared over the steep hills and reached speeds over 110 mph, a piece of pure cinematic history that created the chase as we know it today. For nearly 50 years, the film industry, Ford historians, and Mustang enthusiasts believed Bullitt Mustang 558 had vanished forever. Then, in early 2017, a dusty white 1968 Mustang Fastback surfaced in Baja California, Mexico. Hidden away in a backyard, it was moments from being transformed into an Eleanor replica when body shop owner Ralph Garcia decided to verify its VIN. He reached out to Ford historian Kevin Marti, who got to work authenticating the car, and suddenly history shifted. The lost Bullitt stunt car had been found. The evidence was unmistakable, from the VIN number and reinforced shock towers to the original Highland Green beneath the white paint. What could have been a tragic loss to film and automotive history became one of the most significant rediscoveries in both. Creating this timepiece has not damaged, altered, or compromised the car in any way. So how can a watch be crafted with its original parts? When Bullitt 558 re-emerged in 2017, it entered a meticulous restoration. During that process, a small, finite section of original material was found to be beyond repair. This authentic piece of Bullitt DNA, which survived and lived through the brutal jumps and punishment of the San Francisco chase, was deemed too precious to discard. Instead, it was entrusted to us to be preserved in the most fitting way we know: transformed into a timepiece built to honor its legacy, nearly six decades after Bullitt first premiered. Every Bullitt 558 timepiece incorporates genuine material from chassis 558 and captures the soul of the most famous Mustang in history, while celebrating McQueen’s grit, the film’s atmosphere, and one of cinema’s most iconic moments. The DNA itself comes from the stunt car’s tail light panel, an iconic part of the Mustang and a component that survived the impacts, the speed, and the relentless realism McQueen demanded. To us, that is exactly what makes it meaningful. This Bullitt DNA was there for every moment of the greatest car chase of all time. Not only that, part of the tail light panel was reusable, which means the remaining section that was not integrated into the timepiece still sits on the Bullitt 558 Mustang today. The Bullitt 558 is limited to 1486 pieces, dictated by the natural scarcity of the original material. Each watch is individually numbered, with its unique serial engraved directly into the DNA ring, connecting your timepiece to the Bullitt legacy it carries. A tribute to the most iconic chase ever put on film, a defining era of cinema, and the authenticity of Steve McQueen as Frank Bullitt, it captures the spirit of the most celebrated Mustang of them all. Creating a watch worthy of that legacy is a years long, meticulous pursuit. Every component, down to the movement, has been designed with purpose, ensuring the style, proportions, and function align perfectly with the story it tells. From discreet Mustang cues to period correct details, Bullitt 558 is shaped to feel like the watch McQueen would have worn in 1968. Understated yet raw, purposeful, and undeniably cool.
