The Buffalo Braves joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1970 as an expansion team. A dispute over the availability of dates at Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium caused the team to start looking for a new home outside of Western New York. At first a deal was struck to move the team to Miami. However, the franchise was sold to John Y. Brown who had previously owned the ABA's Kentucky Colonels. Brown then swapped franchise's with Irv Levin who owned the Boston Celtics. Once in control of the Braves, Levin moved the team to California to become the San Diego (now Los Angeles) Clippers.
