Buffalo Bill Dancing (Silence of the Lambs)

Buffalo Bill Dancing — The Silence of the Lambs Tee One robe. One song. One scene that permanently changed the meaning of “Goodbye Horses.” Released in 1991, The Silence of the Lambs became an instant landmark in psychological horror, with Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter and Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling entering pop culture almost immediately. But lurking elsewhere in the film is another unforgettable performance: Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill. The infamous basement dance sequence is among the strangest and most unnerving moments in the movie. Alone in front of a video camera, Buffalo Bill poses, dances, and performs to Q Lazzarus’ haunting “Goodbye Horses.” It’s disturbing, oddly mesmerizing, darkly funny, and impossible to forget. The song and scene have since become inseparable, endlessly referenced and parodied in everything from television and comedy to Halloween costumes. The character has also generated considerable discussion over the years, particularly regarding the film’s treatment of gender identity. The movie explicitly states that Buffalo Bill is not transgender, but critics and LGBTQ+ viewers have understandably debated the impact of placing gender nonconformity and feminine presentation alongside a monstrous serial killer—especially at a time when positive trans representation in mainstream movies was virtually nonexistent. That complicated legacy hasn't stopped the scene from becoming one of horror cinema’s great pieces of cult iconography. Ted Levine’s fearless, deeply unsettling performance is a major reason Buffalo Bill remains instantly recognizable more than three decades later.
