Participants will be introduced to the traditional craft of broom making while creating their own functional hand broom from natural broomcorn. Beginning with an introduction to broomcorn as both an agricultural material and historic tool-making fiber, participants will learn how broomcorn is selected, prepared, bundled, and shaped. Through demonstration and guided instruction, students will learn foundational broom-making techniques including sorting and preparing broomcorn, working with tension, binding, shaping, and stitching. The workshop emphasizes the relationship between material, hand skill, and function while giving participants an accessible introduction to a craft traditionally learned through observation and repetition. Each participant will leave with a completed handmade Turkey Wing Broom all black and the foundational knowledge of how traditional brooms are constructed.
