Brodie Eastern Red Cedar – Evergreen with Ornamental Berries

Brodie Eastern Red Cedar – Native, Tough & Strikingly Beautiful The Brodie Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana ‘Brodie’) is one of the finest native columnar evergreens you can plant in an American landscape. A selected form of the Eastern Red Cedar — one of the most widely distributed native trees in North America — Brodie combines the rugged adaptability and ecological value of a true native with a refined, upright columnar form that makes it equally at home as a privacy screen, windbreak, or specimen tree. Ornamental silvery-blue berries. Feathery, dark green foliage. Exceptional drought and heat tolerance. Cold-hardy to Zone 4. And a magnet for birds, butterflies, and beneficial wildlife. Available in 2–3 ft. and 3–4 ft. sizes. Why You’ll Love Brodie Eastern Red Cedar True Native Plant: A selected form of Juniperus virginiana — native to eastern North America and naturally adapted to a wide range of soils, climates, and conditions Ornamental Blue Berries: Produces attractive silvery-blue, waxy berries (technically seed cones) that persist through winter — a beautiful ornamental feature and a critical food source for birds Outstanding Wildlife Value: One of the most wildlife-friendly trees you can plant — berries feed over 50 species of birds including cedar waxwings, bluebirds, and robins; dense branching provides critical nesting and winter shelter Exceptional Drought Tolerance: Once established, one of the most drought-tolerant columnar evergreens available — thrives in hot, dry conditions that stress arborvitae and Leyland Cypress Naturally Columnar Form: Dense, upright, narrow growth habit — ideal for privacy screens, windbreaks, and tight spaces without requiring shearing Adaptable to Poor Soils: Thrives in rocky, sandy, clay, and alkaline soils where most evergreens struggle — one of the most soil-tolerant columnar trees available Cold & Heat Hardy: Hardy to Zone 4 and heat-tolerant to Zone 9 — one of the widest climate ranges of any columnar evergreen Low Maintenance: Once established, requires virtually no care — no irrigation, no fertilization, no pruning needed to maintain its natural form Privacy Screen, Windbreak & Specimen Uses Brodie Eastern Red Cedar excels in multiple landscape roles. As a privacy screen, plant 4–6 ft. apart for a dense, year-round green wall. As a windbreak, its deep root system and flexible branching handle strong winds exceptionally well. As a specimen tree, its ornamental berries, feathery texture, and wildlife activity make it a living focal point through all four seasons. Growing Zones & Care Guide USDA Hardiness Zones: Zones 4–9. Brodie Eastern Red Cedar is one of the most climate-adaptable columnar evergreens available — thriving from cold northern gardens to hot southern landscapes across an enormous range of conditions. Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun (6+ hours daily) produces the densest growth, best berry production, and most attractive form. Tolerates partial shade but with reduced density. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, Brodie Eastern Red Cedar is highly drought-tolerant and typically requires no supplemental irrigation in most climates. One of the most drought-tolerant columnar evergreens available. Soil: Exceptionally adaptable — rocky, sandy, clay, loamy, and alkaline soils are all tolerated. Excellent drainage tolerance. One of the most soil-tolerant columnar evergreens available. Avoid only waterlogged or permanently wet sites. Fertilizing: Rarely needed. Established trees in average soils require no fertilization. A light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring can support establishment in very poor soils. Pruning: Virtually none required. The naturally columnar form is self-maintaining. Remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter if desired. Avoid heavy shearing, which removes the berry-producing tips and disrupts the natural form. Cedar-Apple Rust: Eastern Red Cedar is an alternate host for cedar-apple rust, a fungal disease that affects apple and crabapple trees. If you have apple trees nearby, be aware of this relationship — though Brodie itself is not significantly harmed by the disease. Growth Rate: Moderate — approximately 1–2 ft. per year. Slower than arborvitae but exceptionally long-lived and increasingly beautiful with age. Mature Size: Typically 20–25 ft. tall and 6–8 ft. wide in the Brodie form — a refined, narrow silhouette suited to a wide range of landscape applications. Our American Pillar Thuja grows 2–3 ft. per year in an ultra-narrow columnar form — an excellent choice when speed is the priority. Brodie Eastern Red Cedar is the better choice when native plant value, wildlife habitat, drought tolerance, and long-term landscape beauty are the goals. Native, tough, wildlife-friendly, and strikingly beautiful through all four seasons — the Brodie Eastern Red Cedar is the columnar evergreen that gives back to your landscape and your local ecosystem for decades to come.
