In the winter, the broccoli crowns are mainly sourced from Mexico and California. Broccoli Crown aka "Broccoli Asian-Cut Crowns", "Brócoli", "Xi-Lan-Hua", "Lǜ-Hua-Cai", "Lǜ-Hua-Ye-Cai", "西兰花", "绿花菜", "绿花椰菜", "西蘭花", "綠花菜", "綠花椰菜" A broccoli crown is an edible flower head that sprouts from the stalk with cut-off or shortened stems. The flower head is dark green with a lighter shade of green stem. A crown of broccoli is the head of the broccoli with the stalk cut to less than one inch in length. The flavor of the broccoli crown is earthy with just a hint of bitterness at the end. Broccoli is usually steamed, sautéed, or roasted. Broccoli crown is available year-round. Handling Tip Selection Broccoli crown with a head of florets that are tightly closed and consistent color of either dark green or purplish-green buds depending on the variety. Both the head and the stem are firm to hand pressure. Our customers prefer shorter stems over longer stems. Check the bottom of the broccoli stalk for a smooth white cut, without any signs of hollow-core/hollow stem. Storage The broccoli crown should be stored at 32ºF (0ºC) with a relative humidity of ninety-eight to a hundred percent with mist. Package ice is required if you cannot maintain the recommended temperature or relative humidity. The typical shelf life is two to three weeks. Coldwater can revive a slightly wilted broccoli crown. Long-term storage leads to discoloration, buds falling off, and softening.  Broccoli crown is highly sensitive to ethylene, a naturally occurring gas that regulates ripening, with a common symptom of florets yellowing. Broccoli crowns should not be stored with high ethylene-producing products to extend shelf life. Broccoli crown produces very little ethylene. The broccoli crown is not sensitive to chilling injury and should be stored as cold as possible without freezing.
