British Rail, Cornish Riviera Express 1958

The Cornish Riviera Express is a British express passenger train that has run between London and the historic port of Penzance in Cornwall since 1904, only briefly ceasing during two World Wars. Today, it remains one of the country’s iconic passenger trains, with a journey that takes in some of the most beautiful views in England and lasts for about five hours. A Pullman service currently offers lunches and dinner on board, but this 1958 menu is a reminder of when British train catering was at its best. A ‘luncheon’ was served for nine shillings and sixpence (the British currency at that time) and a full wine list was offered, including many fine vintages. Afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes and scones was also served. The lovely image on the front cover of a stylish woman watching Cornish fishermen off-load their catches at this lovely port, which was once famous for its pirates, was painted by David Michie (1928-2015). This work of this highly regarded artist, often inspired by travel, was always colorful and light in touch. Favorite subjects included birds, nature, and people in the street. He worked both in oils and watercolor. Courtesy Private Collection.
