Briggs & Stratton 200A Standard SED Transfer Switch

Is Your Home Wired for Safe Generator Power , or Are You Still Running Extension Cords? You've been through an outage. Maybe it lasted a few hours, maybe a few days. And if you're honest, the way you handled it , extension cords snaking through cracked windows, a refrigerator on a long run from the garage , wasn't safe, wasn't comfortable, and wasn't something you want to repeat. Worse, if your generator was ever connected without a proper transfer switch, you may have been back-feeding power into the utility grid without knowing it. That's not just illegal. It can kill the lineworker trying to restore power to your street. Without a proper transfer switch, your generator is only half a solution. The Briggs & Stratton 200A Standard SED Transfer Switch closes that gap. It's a 200-amp Service Equipment Disconnect transfer switch designed for full-home automatic backup, built to code, and engineered to pair directly with Briggs & Stratton's most capable home standby generators. Full 200-amp capacity: Handles the entire electrical load of a typical home, so no circuits get left behind during an outage. Standard SED design: Meets National Electrical Code requirements for service equipment disconnect, keeping your installation code-compliant from day one. NEMA 3R outdoor enclosure: Rated for rain, sleet, and ice , built to live outside year-round without corrosion or weather damage. Automatic switching: When the grid goes down, the transfer happens without anyone touching a switch, so your family doesn't have to do anything. Designed for 22kW and 26kW generators: The most common pairing for Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect+ standby generators, so compatibility is straightforward. 200A SED Transfer Switch Features & Performance 200-Amp Service Capacity Most homes in the United States are served by a 200-amp main panel. This transfer switch matches that capacity exactly, meaning it can handle your full electrical service , not just a handful of selected circuits. When the generator kicks on, your home runs the way it normally does. Standard SED (Service Equipment Disconnect) Architecture The SED designation isn't just a label. It means this transfer switch is classified as service entrance equipment, which satisfies the NEC requirement for a disconnect at the service entrance. That matters for permit approval, inspection sign-off, and long-term code compliance. If you're working with a licensed electrician, they'll recognize this immediately. NEMA 3R Outdoor Enclosure The enclosure is rated NEMA 3R, which means it's designed for outdoor installation and protected against falling rain, sleet, and the formation of ice on the enclosure. It's the standard rating for outdoor electrical equipment in residential applications , not a compromise, not an upgrade, just the right spec for the job. Optimized for Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect+ Generators This transfer switch is the most common pairing for the Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect+ 22kW and 26kW standby generators. Pairing matched components from the same manufacturer simplifies installation, reduces compatibility guesswork, and gives your electrician a clean, documented system to work with. If you're running a smaller service or want to protect a defined set of circuits, the Briggs & Stratton 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch is worth a look as well. See full specifications below for complete technical details. Ideal Use Cases for the Briggs & Stratton 200A SED Transfer Switch Full-home standby backup: You have a 22kW or 26kW Briggs & Stratton standby generator and want your entire home , HVAC, well pump, sump pump, kitchen, and all , to run automatically when the grid fails. This is the transfer switch that makes that possible. New standby generator installations: An electrician is pulling permits and installing a standby generator from scratch. The 200A SED satisfies code requirements for service entrance disconnect and passes inspection without workarounds. Replacing an undersized or non-compliant transfer switch: You already have a generator but the existing switching setup doesn't meet current NEC standards or can't handle your full 200-amp service. This is a direct upgrade path. Homes with high electrical demand: Large square footage, electric HVAC, EV charging circuits, or multiple large appliances mean you can't afford to drop circuits during an outage. A 200-amp transfer switch keeps everything online. Electricians and contractors: You're specifying or installing a system for a client with a Briggs & Stratton standby generator. This is the manufacturer-matched component that simplifies documentation and warranty coverage. Not sure if this is the right fit for your service size or generator model? Why Choose the Briggs & Stratton 200A SED Transfer Switch Over a Manual or Lower-Amp Alternative Manual transfer switches require someone to physically operate them during an outage , at night, in a storm, possibly when no one capable is home. An automatic SED transfer switch eliminates that dependency entirely. The moment utility power drops, the switch acts on its own. Lower-amperage transfer switches, like a 100-amp unit, force you to choose which circuits get generator power and which don't. For homes with 200-amp service and full-home backup generators, that's an unnecessary compromise. The 200A rating means your entire panel is covered. If your home runs on a smaller service, the Briggs & Stratton 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch is a properly sized alternative worth considering. Briggs & Stratton has been manufacturing power equipment for over a century. Their standby generator and transfer switch systems are engineered as matched pairs, which means fewer compatibility issues, cleaner installations, and a single point of contact for warranty support. This transfer switch is most commonly paired with the Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect+ 22kW and 26kW standby generators. It's engineered as a matched component within the Briggs & Stratton ecosystem, which simplifies installation and ensures compatibility. If you're running a different generator model, consult your electrician or contact our team to confirm fitment before ordering. Does the Briggs & Stratton 200A SED Transfer Switch meet NEC code requirements? Yes. The SED designation means this unit qualifies as service entrance equipment, satisfying the National Electrical Code requirement for a disconnect at the service entrance. This is a critical distinction for permit approval and inspection sign-off in most jurisdictions. Your licensed electrician will be familiar with this classification. Can the 200A SED Transfer Switch power my entire home during an outage? It's designed to do exactly that. A 200-amp transfer switch matches the standard residential service size in the U.S., so it covers your full electrical panel rather than a selected subset of circuits. When paired with a properly sized standby generator, your home's HVAC, appliances, lighting, and other loads can all remain operational during a grid outage. Does this transfer switch require professional installation? Yes, and that's not optional. Transfer switches connect directly to your home's service entrance, which involves working with live utility conductors. Installation must be performed by a licensed electrician and typically requires a permit and inspection. Attempting a DIY installation on service entrance equipment is dangerous and will void any warranty coverage. How is the Briggs & Stratton 200A SED Transfer Switch different from a manual transfer switch? A manual transfer switch requires someone to physically operate it when the power goes out. The 200A Standard SED is an automatic transfer switch, meaning it detects a utility outage and switches to generator power on its own, without any action from you or your family. When utility power is restored, it switches back automatically as well. Is the 200A rating right for my home, or should I consider a lower-amperage model? If your home has a 200-amp main panel and you want full-home backup coverage, this is the correct unit. Homes with smaller service panels or more modest backup needs may be better served by a lower-amperage option. Still have questions? Contact our power specialists before you order.
