Briggs & Stratton 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch

Is Your Generator Actually Safe to Use Without a Proper Transfer Switch? You bought a generator to protect your home during an outage. But if you're running extension cords through windows or doorways, you're trading one risk for another. Overloaded cords overheat, tripped breakers leave critical circuits dark, and without a proper disconnect, your generator can back-feed live voltage onto the utility lines, putting lineworkers in serious danger. That's not a hypothetical. Back-feeding is illegal, and the consequences, for your household and for the crews working to restore power, are severe. A generator without a code-compliant transfer switch isn't a backup plan; it's a liability. The Briggs & Stratton 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch solves this cleanly. It creates a safe, legal, hard-wired connection between your generator and your home's electrical panel, with a Service Equipment Disconnect built in so you meet code requirements from the start. Eliminates back-feed risk by isolating your home from the utility grid the moment you switch to generator power. Rated at 150 amps, sized for medium-load homes that need more capacity than a basic 100A switch can handle. NEMA 3R outdoor-rated enclosure stands up to rain, sleet, and dust without corroding or compromising the connection. Standard SED design satisfies National Electrical Code requirements for service equipment disconnect, keeping your installation inspection-ready. Hard-wired installation means no extension cords, no makeshift connections, and no guesswork for whoever operates it during an outage. 150A Standard SED Features & Performance Service Equipment Disconnect (SED) Compliance The SED designation isn't just a label. It means this transfer switch is rated and listed to serve as the main service disconnect for your home's electrical system. That matters for permitting, inspections, and long-term code compliance. Many jurisdictions require SED-rated equipment at the service entrance, and this unit meets that requirement out of the box. 150-Amp Capacity for Medium-Load Homes At 150 amps, this switch handles the full service capacity of a medium-load home without derating or compromise. You're not forced to cherry-pick a handful of circuits. Critical loads like your HVAC system, refrigerator, sump pump, and lighting can all stay connected. If your home runs on a 150A service panel, this is the correct match. Homes with smaller service panels or fewer critical loads may find the Briggs & Stratton 100A Standard SED Transfer Switch a better fit. NEMA 3R Outdoor Enclosure The NEMA 3R rating means the enclosure is built for outdoor installation. It resists falling rain, sleet, and external ice formation without allowing moisture ingress. This is the standard required for exterior electrical equipment, and it's what allows the switch to be mounted at the service entrance where it belongs, not tucked inside where it's harder to access during an emergency. Straightforward Switching Operation The standard manual switching mechanism is designed to be operated by any adult in the household, not just the person who installed it. Clear labeling and a logical switching sequence reduce the chance of operator error when the lights are out and stress is high. See full specifications below for complete electrical ratings and enclosure details. Ideal Use Cases for the Briggs & Stratton 150A SED Transfer Switch Whole-home generator integration: You've invested in a standby or portable generator capable of powering your entire home. This switch gives that generator a proper, code-compliant connection point so every circuit it can handle is available, safely. New construction and permitted installations: Electricians pulling permits for generator hookups need SED-rated equipment at the service entrance. This unit satisfies that requirement and passes inspection without workarounds. Replacing an aging or non-compliant transfer switch: Older manual switches or interlock kits may no longer meet current NEC requirements. Upgrading to a listed SED transfer switch brings the installation back into compliance and improves safety. Homes with 150A service panels: If your utility service is rated at 150 amps, your transfer switch needs to match. Undersizing the switch creates a bottleneck and a potential code violation. This unit is the correct capacity for that service level. Rural and storm-prone properties: Homes in areas with frequent outages need reliable, weatherproof switching infrastructure. The NEMA 3R enclosure holds up through repeated use in harsh outdoor conditions without degrading the internal components. Not sure if this is the right capacity for your setup? Check our FAQs below or contact our power specialists before you order. Why Choose the Briggs & Stratton 150A SED Transfer Switch Over a Basic Interlock Kit Interlock kits and manual interlock devices are inexpensive, but they're not equivalent to a listed transfer switch. Many jurisdictions don't accept them as code-compliant alternatives to a proper transfer switch, and they don't provide the service equipment disconnect function required at the service entrance. The Briggs & Stratton 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch is a listed, purpose-built device that satisfies both the transfer switching requirement and the SED requirement in a single installation. Compared to smaller-capacity switches, the 150A rating means you're not forced to shed load or manually rotate circuits during an outage. Everything your generator can power stays powered. For installations that need circuit-level load management rather than a full-service switch, the Briggs & Stratton 100A 16-Circuit Transfer Switch offers a different approach worth considering. Briggs & Stratton has been manufacturing power equipment for over a century. Their transfer switch line is engineered to work with their generator lineup and meets UL listing requirements for residential electrical installations. Frequently Asked Questions About the Briggs & Stratton 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch What does "SED" mean on the Briggs & Stratton 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch? SED stands for Service Equipment Disconnect. This designation means the transfer switch is rated and listed to function as the main disconnect for your home's electrical service, not just as a switching device. Many local electrical codes and the National Electrical Code require SED-rated equipment at the service entrance when integrating a generator, so this listing is important for permit approval and inspection compliance. Is the Briggs & Stratton 150A SED Transfer Switch compatible with any generator brand? The 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch is a service-entrance device that connects between your utility meter and your home's main panel. It's designed to work with Briggs & Stratton generators but can be compatible with other generator brands depending on your installation configuration. Always have a licensed electrician verify compatibility with your specific generator output, inlet connection, and local code requirements before purchasing. Can the Briggs & Stratton 150A SED Transfer Switch be installed outdoors? Yes. The NEMA 3R enclosure rating is specifically designed for outdoor installation. It protects internal components against rain, sleet, and ice accumulation, which makes it suitable for mounting at the service entrance on an exterior wall. This is the correct installation location for a service equipment disconnect in most residential applications. How does the 150A SED Transfer Switch differ from a 100A model? The primary difference is service capacity. The 150A model is sized for homes with a 150-amp utility service, allowing the full panel capacity to be served through the transfer switch without derating. Homes with a 100-amp service panel should use a 100A-rated transfer switch instead. Using a switch rated below your service amperage creates a bottleneck and may not pass inspection. Does installing the Briggs & Stratton 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch require a permit? In virtually all jurisdictions, yes. Any work at the electrical service entrance, including transfer switch installation, requires a permit and must be performed by a licensed electrician. The SED listing on this unit is specifically intended to satisfy the code requirements that inspectors look for at the service entrance, which simplifies the permitting process. Always check with your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before beginning installation. Is this transfer switch the right choice for a whole-home standby generator setup? The Briggs & Stratton 150A Standard SED Transfer Switch is well-suited for whole-home generator integration in homes with 150A service. It allows your generator to power the full panel without forcing you to manually select individual circuits. If your home has a smaller service rating or you prefer circuit-level load management, our power specialists can help you identify the right configuration. Still have questions?
